Israel accepts Quartet call for peace talks (Reuters)

JERUSALEM (Reuters) ? Israel accepted on Sunday a call by international mediators to resume peace talks with the Palestinians, who quickly reaffirmed their refusal to negotiate until settlement-building stops on land they seek for state.

"Israel welcomes the Quartet call for direct negotiations between the parties without preconditions," the statement by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said.

"Israel calls on the Palestinian Authority to do the same and to enter into direct negotiations without delay."

The four mediators -- the United States, the European Union, Russia and the United Nations -- responded to a Palestinian application for full membership at the U.N. on September 23 by urging both sides to resume talks within a month.

Israel and the United States oppose the unilateral bid launched by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas after two decades of on-again, off-again negotiations failed to establish a Palestinian state.

Asked about Netanyahu's acceptance of the Quartet's initiative, Nabil Abu Rdainah, a spokesman for Abbas, said "returning to negotiations requires Israel to commit to stopping settlement."

Abu Rdainah said Israel also must recognize the "1967 borders" lines that existed before its occupation of the West Bank in a Middle East war that year.

Citing security concerns, Netanyahu has balked at U.S. President Barack Obama's proposal to use those lines as the starting point for statehood negotiations with the Palestinians, who have yet to respond formally to the Quartet's call.

Complicating the forum's efforts and drawing a chorus of international criticism, Israel announced plans on Tuesday to build 1,100 new homes in Gilo, on annexed land near Jerusalem.

Israeli cabinet ministers who initially balked at accepting the Quartet proposal changed their minds on Sunday, at least in part as a bid to ease global anger at the latest settlement construction plan, an Israeli political source said.

Israel considers all of Jerusalem, including the eastern areas captured in 1967 as its capital, a claim that is not recognized internationally. It says Gilo will remain in its control under any future peace deal.

Palestinians want East Jerusalem as the capital of the state they hope to establish in the West Bank and in the Gaza Strip, an enclave controlled by Abbas's Hamas Islamist rivals since 2007.

Some 500,000 Israelis live in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, areas home to 2.5 million Palestinians. Israeli settlements, Palestinians say, will deny them a viable country. Israel cites historical and Biblical links to the land.

U.S.-brokered peace talks collapsed a year ago after Netanyahu refused to extend a partial moratorium on construction in West Bank settlements. He has given no indication he would be prepared to agree to another freeze to coax Palestinians back into talks.

The Quartet, saying it aimed for a peace agreement by the end of 2012, has urged both sides to refrain from "provocative actions."

In accepting the Quartet's call, Israel said it had "some concerns" about the proposal, such as the 2012, the Israeli source told reporters on condition of anonymity.

Israel also wants the talks to focus on core conflict issues such as refugees and Jerusalem, and not only borders and security as the Quartet has proposed, said the source.

Despite these reservations, Israeli cabinet ministers agreed to accept the proposal figuring the Palestinians "would in any case not agree to attend these negotiations," the source said.

At the U.N. on Friday, a Security Council panel on admitting new members to the U.N. met for the first time on the Palestinian membership bid.

It was the beginning of an assessment process that will pit the aid-dependent Palestinians against Israel, and the United States, which has said it would veto the bid in the Security Council if necessary.

Some diplomats have suggested the issue could stay with the membership committee for weeks or months before it is passed back to the Security Council for a vote, giving mediators more time to try to restart peace talks.

Saturday Vivre ? Metcalf Family Mews

As you know that when I say, ?Vivre? that it means life with style.? With that said, it?s hard to imagine house work ?with style,? no matter how pretty the apron. But I do try!

As I was trying to organize my day, my week and my month, since today is the 1st of the month and make the final plans for my 50th (intimate family ?tea style?) birthday party at home in Party Central aka our attached garage. I couldn?t find my mop. I also, didn?t think it prudent, that I should Swiffer my garage floor. The mop is here somewhere, just have no idea what someone may have needed it for, to remove it from its rack, but worse than that, they didn?t put it back. No matter, I?ll just run and get me a new one. It?s about time for a new one anyway. Does anyone know a good Stanley sales person? It?s either that or the Dollar Store. I have to purchase some new toothbrushes for each of us and discard the old ones anyway; might as well make it a twofer.

The list was a long one today, so I?m pacing myself. I seem to tire a lot faster than I used to. Cleaning the gutters & the garage is on the list for today, and I?m thinking that one if not both are completely out of the question.

I have no idea as to how all of these chores? this entire list, hit on the same day. Just to name a few: Rearrange the family room furniture; Organize shoes & handbags in my closet; Add RidX to the Septic Tank; data backup (luckily, I have that programmed & it will even clean & run the system restore for me to create a new system restore point on the 1st of every month, can?t beat that); Ro-Lin Farms ? Mulch 855-4128 $85.00 ($35.00 per scoop ? 2 scoop minimum) $10.00 delivery fee. This doesn?t include all the daily chores that have to be done or those that are in red.

How did this happen? I?m only one person. People still seem to think that I?m some kind of conglomerate or company that employs 50 people, but nope, it?s just me. I wish I was Martha; she has a ton of assistants. I should see if she could lend me one for a few days, just until I catch up. I will admit that our lawn is maintained by a service ? he?s just one guy too, but it?s not Anthony. Anthony will pay to have it mowed, so that he doesn?t have to. I would mow myself, if he?d pay to get the house cleaned every week! Deal?!

Anthony works too much (and he really does) to help around the house (so he reminds all the time, he has never helped out before ? so I doubt if he?ll start now ? unless I have it about 99% complete anyway). He?s at the Pumpkin Run in Owensville, Ohio today; buying or selling or both. It?s the Fastiques annual car show & swap, so that makes the gutters, virtually out of the question. Unless, and it?s seriously doubtful, that I?m going to get the ladder out and have at it myself. It?s probably? not going to happen. If I had the energy to that, I?d paint the bathroom, foyer and front door, weed and start planting more spring bulbs. Not enough hours in the day.

We (me & party central) survived three birthday parties last week and when mine is done, no more until the middle of November. Yeah. I need the rest and will play a little catch up.

I?ve asked for a ?SIMPLE? family birthday party. I chose the 50 and fabulous there, seemed more than fitting (insert chuckle here). I just want relax and enjoy turning 50 (half of a hundred) with my immediate family. It should be lots of fun and less stressful for me.

Just have to get the day to day things done now? complete my To Do list. I do appreciate all of the requests this week, except for the one I deleted about guitars. Most are on hold for a few more days, please bare with me, at least until I get this last party over with. Thanks

I want to move the dance floor to the other side of the room, that?s a big job, but I guess, I can add it to the list (bigger chuckle here). Just my luck, I?ll end up throwing my back out moving it and will hate it, then have to move it back again. This may require a little more thought.

I should Windex the windows and wipe the switch covers while I?m at it (and no, I?m not indorsing any products, here ? I just happen to have it saved to Outlook that way). I just read it and try to get it done. I get some serious satisfaction when I check the box, COMPLETE! It?s being held accountable by an unbiased program that makes me nuts. It can?t yell at me for not getting it done, but it will go red, which is basically the same thing if it?s not done, and that?s what does it! I knew that going 50 meant going RED, but it wasn?t supposed to be in Outlook (sigh)!

It wouldn?t be so bad, had I not let so many things go in order to plan for these spa, birthday parties and the wedding. I?ve got every shade of pink, black & white coming out my ears (not literally). I?ve been washing glassware from daylight to dark for a week now. It must be cleaned before and after every party, some even during, and I keep buying more. You think that?s not a job? I do love the ?Crystal? cycle on my dishwasher, it?s the only cycle that doesn?t leave white streaks on my dishes. I?m not sure why, but I may start using it for all my dishes.

I?ve said all of this, just to say one thing, ?I?m HAPPY!? and raspberries to all of the people that have criticized me, my hobby (which is ?History,? family history to be more specific), and my research this past month. I have a LIFE, a real one, complete with family, friends and obligations. I clean my own house, love to cook and to eat, and care for all those whom enter here.

It is to them that I owe my due diligence. If I make a mistake or don?t like something, I?ll just change it, but I love my life, so there is little to change. I?m happy with the way it has turned out. I don?t mind turning a fabulous 50. As I said before, ?I?m half way through a life well lived.? I have a handsome husband that loves me, more than he does himself; he allows me the freedom to be me, to make mistakes, reminds me of the things I may forget, and loves me for all of my quirks, for which I am eternally grateful. I have beautiful children and lots of gorgeous Grandchildren; biological, adopted and foster ? few can tell, or even know, which are which. I love them all.

What more could a woman ask for?

Last week, my Facebook status read, ??wants a Tom Jones CD and pajama jeans for her birthday. Lowered expectations!? Its not that I don?t really want anything, I just go get it. I have more than most could expect to get out of this life, maybe even more than that. It?s not monetary or worldly goods, or even things that you can see that make me happy ? but the things that matter the most to me, is my family and everything that comes with it. I don?t see chores as demeaning to me, but rather satisfying, it may not be to you, but we don?t all want the same things out of life. Someone has to vacuum, clean the oven and icebox ? why not enjoy it?

If you ask me, I have it all. I don?t need a big production for another year lived, regardless of the number. I do wish that and much more for you, and twice as much as that, for my Grand?s.

Turning 50 isn?t a bad thing; to me? it?s a reward. It is a wonderful life!

A happy person is not a person in a certain set of circumstances but a certain set of attitudes. ~ Hugh Downs

Tevatron collider shut down, but not easily

One of the world's most powerful atom smashers, the Tevatron, shut down Friday, with video from the event streamed online.

The atom smasher is located at the federal Fermilab physics laboratory in Batavia, Ill. Inside the accelerator, particles were ramped up to near light speed as they zipped around a 4-mile-round (6.3-kilometer-round) ring. When two particles collided, they disintegrated into other exotic particles in a powerful outpouring of energy.

While it was once the most powerful atom smasher, the Tevatron was surpassed by the new Large Hadron Collider at Europe's CERN physics lab on the French-Swiss border. [Twisted Physics: 7 Mind-Blowing Findings]

The Tevatron's end came a little after 2:30 p.m. CT (3:30 p.m. ET), as Fermilab physicist Helen Edwards pushed two specially constructed buttons, one red and the other blue. The red button shut down the collision of protons and antiprotons in the Tevatron. The blue button shut off the electrical current to the accelerator.

That one, Edwards had to push twice.

"It didn't want to give up so easy," said Bob Mau, the head of the accelerator division operation department at Fermilab, who was leading the live-streamed shutdown.?

The 28-year-old Tevatron was most recently in the news in April when a report suggested the accelerator's CDF experiment might have detected a never-before-seen subatomic particle. However, further tests have suggested that the tantalizing signal was a fluke.

The Tevatron played a part in some major physics finds, such as the existence of the top quark and five baryons. The baryon discovery helped scientists test and refine the Standard Model of particle physics and shape our understanding of matter, energy, space and time.?

The experiments at Tevatron have also helped narrow down the search for the elusive Higgs boson, or "God particle." LHC physicists are on the hunt for the Higgs, the last fundamental particle to be predicted by the Standard Model but not found.

Officials said those involved with the two detector experiments, CDF and DZero, will continue to analyze already-collected data. Those results will be detailed in future scientific papers. The studies at the two detectors are aimed at understanding and identifying the origin of mass, extra dimensions of space and new particles.

In addition, Fermilab officials say they will continue to operate most of the 10 particle accelerators onsite to generate particle beams for experiments involving protons, neutrinos and muons.

The mood today, however, was nostalgic.?

"For many of us, CDF is more than a machine," CDF scientist Ben Kilminster said as he and his team shut down their detector. "It's a living creature that has the superhuman ability to see the microscopic quantum world. So it's going to be with heavy hearts that many of us watch it close its eyes to this world that has captivated us for so long."

Hire A Dedicated Virtual Employee To Care Of All Your Office Requirements

By: Abilene Jones

Outsourcing has certainly simplified things for businesses around the western world. It has opened the doors to a wider access to talent and skills and that too at affordable rates. India has certainly consolidated its position as the undisputed leader of the outsourcing industry. It has everything that a business concern in the UK or the US is looking for ? a huge talent pool, English-speaking professionals, excellent telecommunication facilities and pro-IT and outsourcing government policies.

Among the many Indian outsourcing vendors, there are a few like VirtualEmployee.com who have taken outsourcing up several notches. This outsourcing service company provides customized 'virtual employees' who can take care of any kind of office work, if it can be executed using a PC and an internet connection. In short, you can hire a dedicated virtual employee to take care of all your office requirements.

What kind of office work are we looking at here?

1.Customer service. Customers are vital for any business to succeed. After all, every business is geared towards pleasing its customers in order to grow, make more money and leave lasting recall value in the minds of its target audience. By having your customer service needs taken care of by a remote employee here in India, you have given your valuable customers 24x7 access to your products, services and helpline.

2.Your virtual employee can also help ease the pressure of your own time and resources by handling tasks such as business research, literature research, research into company profiles, market survey and forms processing.

3.Managing a database. This is one of the most important but definitely time-consuming office jobs. Organizations often generate massive amounts of information, all of which needs to be stored in an organized manner for easy retrieval. Database management (and data entry) is an ongoing office work that can be best left to a virtual employee who has expertise in the field.

4.Writing content for your website. A website without content is an empty shell. Content writing is a skill that is best left to those who have a flair for writing. Business enterprises are desirous of employing professional content writers from India who are fluent in English, for their various writing projects. These could be SEO content writing, article writing, blog writing, writing press releases, technical writing, brochure content writing and much else. And since this is something that can be performed by someone who needs just a PC and an internet connection, outsourcing your website's content requirements to a remote employee is a good business decision.

5.Work that may require special skills and typically includes value-added scientific services like X-ray reading, medical and other forms of transcription. All kinds of Information Technology outsourcing. This includes web services like designing, hosting, maintenance and internet media analysis. Graphic designing, in particular, is the most outsourced process of a company to a virtual graphic designer.

6.Law and legal work. More and more law firms in the US and UK are waking up to the enormous benefits of outsourcing time-consuming and tedious research-based legal work to reliable offshore dedicated employee in India.

7.All kinds of medical-centric jobs like jobs like medical transcription, medical report preparation and teleradiology services that include medical coding, diagnostic services, reading X-rays, sonography, CT scans, MRIs and PET scans. Also includes are and testing services like genetic profiling, oncology tests, HIV and allergy tests, all highly specialised services which require professionalism and technological know-how.

Therefore, hiring a virtual employee from India to handle routine office work is a very smarty outsourcing decision.

Daya is an experienced former journalist who has written extensively for the UK gift industry till recently. Now, she brings her considerable creative writing experience to the exciting world of Offshore Outsourcing Company India, offshoring and in particular, indian outsourcing companies. She has written many handy guides about how to outsource varied business functions in fields like IT, back office, law, medicine, content writing and much else.

Dispatching sales training myths and best practices ? A STC Classic ...

A Classic - '63 Corvette

As the Sales Training Connection readership grows, we decided to reprint some of our most popular posts. In this post we combined two posts: ?Dispatching Three Myths of Sales Coaching and Best Practices?for addressing them.?If you go back to the original posts, you?ll also see several thoughtful comments that were posted. Here goes ?

Many agree that sales coaching is a critical piece of the puzzle in developing a world-class sales team. Yet, there is less agreement on how to best go about it. Many great companies start sales coaching initiatives with commitment and vigor. Far fewer exit the other end of the tunnel having succeeded. Why? One reason that usually comes up early is the lack of time. A lack of well-defined incentives for sales coaching usually makes the list, too.?

Although individual managers can?t alter some of the institutional? issues that frequently get in the way of successful sales coaching, let?s explore?three common hobgoblins of sales coaching that can be dispatched.?

Myth 1?? Sales coaching is about teaching sales people skills to improve their performance. This may sound right initially, but it turns out that effective coaching is not so much about teaching people, as it is about helping them to learn. This is not a play on words; these two statements say very different things. The traditional sales coaching model says, ?I?m the manager ? I?ll diagnose what?s wrong and suggest what you should do to improve your performance. Your job is to practice ? my job is to give you feedback.? This model is about teaching people how to fix a performance problem. It often doesn?t work because its objective is to teach something to someone, rather than help someone learn something.?

Newer coaching models, however, say, ?You?re the one responsible for the learning. As your sales manager, ?I?m responsible for helping you become more aware of your strengths and weaknesses and helping you expand?your alternatives for improving your performance.? These models are based on the notion that performance change is more likely to be achieved when the sales person being coached takes responsibility for change. The sales manager?s job is to facilitate, provide direction, and hold individuals accountable vs. telling them what they should or should not do. This alternative model helps explain why top coaches ask more than tell ? and listen more than talk.?

Myth 2 ? Most people can accurately assess their own strengths and weaknesses.? Unfortunately, this is not true.? Most people struggle when attempting to construct an accurate self-assessment of their abilities and have difficulty pinpointing the true nature of their strengths and weaknesses.? In fact, most people seek out evidence that confirms their positive opinions about themselves and often ignore contrary evidence.? This often results in people holding onto a positive self-assessment even after their coach has provided them feedback that contradicts that assessment.? It is very difficult to travel the performance improvement road unless everyone agrees on where the journey begins.??

Recognizing the myth ? so a shared vision of capabilities can be developed ? is one of the opportunities for improving the sales coaching process.? Some ideas are: First, the coach can change the standard against which team members self-judge. For example, shifting to a best practice standard vs. ?what everyone else is doing? will help neutralize explanations for performance weaknesses.? Second, the coach can be specific when describing behaviors such as ?selling value? or ?developing customer relationships.?? Third, the coach can respond to unlikely explanations for certain behaviors or lack of performance by pointing out how others facing the same challenge are able to achieve the desired results.? Fourth, the coach can help people depersonalize negative information to make it easier to confront and handle.?????

Myth 3 ? Results must be reinforced for performance to change.? This is more a half-myth than a full-blown myth.? More accurately, for performance to change, progress ? not just results ? must be rewarded.? Somewhere along the path to achieving real change, most people need some help when trying out new behaviors and instituting new practices. The performance change journey can be frustrating, tedious, and sometimes, even a little scary.? After all, it?s not easy to try new things, particularly when a sales person is trying them out in front of customers.? Everyone needs recognition and acknowledgement of their efforts along the way to results. Top-performing coaches understand this, and they not only help their sales people get off to a good start in their change process, they continue to stand by to help them deal with the risks of fear of failure.??

Let?s continue the story, and look at some best practices for handling these sales coaching myths.

  • Create a Safe Environment.? A critical moment in one?s biggest account is not the best time to experiment! Coaches should help their sales people select safe situations in which to practice new ideas and, on tough occasions, help provide an ?escape route.?? For example, a sales manager might go along on the call to provide a safety net in case something doesn?t go as anticipated.
  • Walk Before You Run.? ?Baptism by fire? is not really a best practice for managing performance change.? Top sales coaches help their people develop realistic assessments of their existing skill levels and then help them plan a series of escalating steps toward the final performance goal.? At the same time, they also up the ante by raising the bar as the learning process continues.
  • Re-institute the Pat on the Back.? Confident people are more likely to bridge the fear of failure chasm.? Sales managers can help by making it clear that it?s okay to ?fall off the horse? ? everybody does who tries new things.? The sales coach can and should help build confidence during the coaching experience by pointing to past successes of the individual and providing positive reinforcement for achieving interim milestones.??

In closing, let?s remember that the one thing sales managers do not have now, or never will have, is a lot of spare time.? So, if sales coaching is to happen, this time issue must be wrestled to the ground.? Though there is no magic solution to the time problem in any large company, there are a few helpful ideas to keep in mind.

One reason some sales managers never have enough time for coaching is because they take on too much of the responsibility of coaching.? If managers view their role as catalysts rather than doers of all things, they will engage others who are willing and able to help.? Top sales coaches believe coaching is an ongoing process vs. an event.? Sometimes they take the lead, sometimes they leverage others who can help, and they always help those being coached learn how to learn for themselves.?
