Ex-Penn State president's 'instinct' to intervene

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Ousted Penn State president Graham Spanier (SPAN'-year) says he wishes he'd known more about former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky so he could've done something about child molestation allegations against him.

Spanier told ABC on Wednesday it would've been his "instinct" to intervene had he known about the allegations against Sandusky. He says he was told Sandusky had been seen engaging in "horseplay" with a boy in a campus shower and he thought that meant "throwing water around, snapping towels."

Spanier and his lawyers have attacked a university-backed report on the sex abuse scandal, calling it a "blundering and indefensible indictment" as they fire a pre-emptive strike while waiting to hear if he'll be charged in the case.

Sandusky was convicted of molesting 10 boys. He maintains his innocence and awaits sentencing.

Back to the basics.

Alright, I'm entertaining the idea of an arena based roleplay. Let me explain.

You can choose nearly any species, and one class below. If you want a custom class or race, run it by me and I'll consider it.

Species Suggestions (More to be added):
Elf: Heightened eyesight and agility.
Argonian (Lizard Man): Claws, regeneration.
Orc: Tough, leathery skin, moderate insensitivity to pain.
Human: Heightened intelligence compared to other races.
Dogman (Looks like a skinny version of modern movie werewolves): Claws, teeth, heightened hearing and sense of smell, minor regeneration, physical strength and speed.

Classes (More classes to be added):
Mage: Cloth robes, aged wooden staff. Essentially an old spear with no head. Begins with 50 mana. Minor fireball spell, costs 10 mana.
Warrior: Choice of heavy iron armor and short-sword, or medium weight leather armor and cracked wooden buckler.
Fighter: Light leather and either heavy iron gauntlets or leather gloves with metal studded knuckles.
Ranger: Light leather, shortbow with a worn string and ten iron arrows.
Rouge: Medium weight leather armor and five iron daggers; Two melee and three weighted for throwing.
Cleric: Cloth robes or very thin leather. Minor healing and strength buffer spell that costs 5 mana each; Begins with 25.
Priest: Cloth robes, cross pendant. Minor healing spell that costs 5 mana; Begins with 40.

You all start out basic, with only the weapons, abilities and clothes alloted by the race and class you choose.

Note: Dogmen cannot choose a class.

Make a character sheet with this information. Characters will improve as the roleplay progresses. Item drops will be determined by die roll.

This is just a test. If I get some interest, we can run it. All I ask is that you're capable of writing more than the bare minimum.

The sky may be the limit, but the ground sure hurts when you fall that far.

Powerful South Sudanese military leader dies: official

JUBA (Reuters) - A powerful South Sudanese army officer and former militia leader influential in some of the country's richest oil regions during its long civil war with the north has died, officials said on Wednesday.

Paulino Matip, deputy commander in chief of South Sudan's national army, was a key figure in the civil war that killed an estimated 2 million people and left the now-independent South one of the world's least developed countries.

South Sudan seceded from Sudan a year ago under a 2005 peace deal and the new government has been struggling to impose its authority over a country the size of France awash with guns.

Backed by Khartoum, Matip had split from the southern rebel Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) during the war and battled factions of the rebel army in areas of the oil-rich Unity State.

He rejoined the SPLA in 2006 under President Salva Kiir's "big tent" policy of reconciliation to unite the South after the peace deal.

Matip "contributed a lot to the unity and reconciliation in this country," South Sudan's Information Minister Barnaba Marial Benjamin told reporters after announcing he had died in Kenya of a "long illness" while waiting to fly to the United States for treatment.

His body is due to be flown to Juba on Friday for burial.

"I think the problems of cohesion were resolved by Paulino Matip," Benjamin said.

Historians describe Matip as a man driven more by ambition during the war than by ideology.

He was "the quintessential freebooter, willing to ally himself with God or the devil, depending on which would supply him with the resources to sustain his panache and his private army," Sudan historian Robert O. Collins wrote.

One of his main interests during the war was protecting and developing a "small trading empire" based on cattle and sorghum in the areas near Bentiu, capital of Unity State, according to historian Douglas Johnson.

Rebel fighting and clashes between rival communities over cattle and other conflicts have killed hundreds of people since South Sudan's independence, mostly in remote areas. The army is composed largely of former militias like Matip's.

Information Minister Benjamin dismissed the suggestion that the SPLA would see any splits or defections because of Matip's death.

"We don't foresee any division of any kind. After all what we were all fighting for was to get our country. Here it is today," he said.

Republican Akin defies party bosses, stays in Missouri Senate race

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican Representative Todd Akin on Wednesday dismissed calls from party leaders that he drop out of the Missouri Senate race after his controversial remarks on abortion and rape, saying party officials should not overrule voters.

Akin has been under fire since he said on Sunday that rape victims could not get pregnant. He backtracked on that position in appearances on several morning TV programs on Wednesday, saying he was wrong to say the female body could shut down reproduction when raped.

"The people of Missouri chose me, and I don't believe it's right for party bosses to decide to override those voters," Akin said on ABC's "Good Morning America" program.

"It makes me uncomfortable to think that the party bosses are going to dictate who runs, as opposed to the election process," he added.

Akin won the primary race against several other Republicans earlier this month to challenge Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill in the November 6 election.

Democrats control the Senate and Republicans need to pick up four seats to take over the chamber. Prior to the Akin controversy, Republicans considered McCaskill one of the most vulnerable Democratic Senate incumbents.

"I've made the decision to stay in because I believe we can win this race," he told ABC.

But when pressed, Akin did not rule out stepping down later. "I'm never going to say everything that could possibly happen. I don't know the future," he said.

Under Missouri election law, Akin had until Tuesday to get his name off the ballot without having to seek a court order.

A number of Republican leaders, including presidential candidate Mitt Romney, have called on the congressman to quit the race after he said in an interview Sunday that it was extremely rare for women to get pregnant from "legitimate rape."

On NBC's "Today" program, Akin said he was not staying in the race for personal gain.

"It's about trying to do the right thing and stand on principle ... This is not about me or about my ego. It is about the Missouri voters."

On both television shows said he was wrong about the medical facts about rape.

On Sunday he had said that pregnancy from rape was "really rare" because: "If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down." That notion has been widely discounted by medical experts.

"That's not true. I was misinformed," he told NBC.
