Twitter warns of concerted hacking attempt, says 250,000 might be affected

Now would be a good time to refresh your Twitter password. The social network has revealed that there was at least one attack on its servers this week that may have collected email addresses, passwords (thankfully encrypted) and session tokens for about 250,000 users. The real risk to users is unknown, but Twitter raises our eyebrows when it suggests that this was more than just a casual scripting hack: it claims the intrusion attempt was "extremely sophisticated," and that other firms might have been subject to a similar breach. You'll know that you were immediately affected only if you see Twitter send a notice of a forced password reset, like what you see pictured above. We'd be cautious, all the same -- when such attempts seemingly increase in frequency by the day, it's not a bad idea to stay on guard.

Best budget beers for the Super Bowl

MJimages / SXC

Stocking a fridge for a game-day party is all about quantity -- but it should still taste good.

By Kara Reinhardt, Cheapism.com

Some days call for a full-bodied, full-flavored beer enjoyed in long, slow sips. Super Bowl Sunday is not one of those days. Stocking a fridge for a game-day party is more about quantity than quality. Yet, you want to serve something worthy of a celebration and sufficient to dull the sting of a loss. That?s why Cheapism took on a task some might find enviable: sampling 19 brews, from low-calorie light beer to good, old American lager to so-called craft beer. The contenders were presented in that order, so more assertive flavors wouldn?t drown out subtle ones. Most of the beers were cheap (exact prices vary by location) and all were domestically produced and nationally distributed.

A panel of 13 beer fans surprised even themselves with their conclusions in the blind taste test. Here are their favorites:

  • Miller Lite ($7.99 for a six-pack of 16-ounce cans) emerged victorious in the lackluster light-beer division, where the entrants were judged flat, watery and flavorless overall. This brand stood out for tasting at least vaguely of hops. It?s a decent choice for anyone trying to limit their calorie intake.
  • Pabst Blue Ribbon ($4.79 for a six-pack of 16-ounce cans) beat out eight competitors -- many of them bigger names and bigger sellers -- to take the top spot among American lagers. Panelists considered this beer highly drinkable and enjoyed the mild, balanced flavor.
  • Natural Ice ($16.49 for a 30-pack of 12-ounce cans) was one of the cheapest beers in the bunch, at less than a nickel an ounce. Not one panelist had ever considered buying this brand and many were stunned to find they had declared it a favorite. Aficionados who have reviewed the beer online suggest that the light body and 5.9 percent alcohol by volume might hold more appeal than the taste, providing a quick, cost-effective route to a nice buzz.
  • Kirkland Signature IPA ($18.99 for a case of 24 12-ounce bottles) comes in a sampler from Costco, along with three other ?handcrafted? beers. It triumphed over its compatriots, as well as a couple of brews with higher prices and more craft-beer cred, to take the top spot in that category. Like any India pale ale, this store-brand IPA put off some drinkers with its hoppy bitterness. Advocates appreciated the relatively complex, balanced flavor, which included notes of citrus.
  • Kirkland Signature German-Style Lager (see above) comes from the same Costco variety pack, which lets party guests choose their preferred style of beer. This one caters to drinkers who enjoy a bready and slightly sweet malt flavor. The tasting panel described it as smooth and rich.

A couple that missed the cut:

  • Miller High Life ($13.99 for 24 12-ounce bottles) was judged boring at best and resembling a certain other golden liquid at worst.
  • Rolling Rock ($4.99 for a six-pack of 12-ounce bottles) displays a light, crisp sweetness ruined by an aftertaste one panelist compared to eraser shavings.

Numbers show the labor market is healing, but slowly

By Jason Lange

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits last week stayed in a range consistent with job growth and incomes rose in December by the most in eight years, mildly positive signs for a still-fragile economy.

The data suggests points to some underlying momentum in the economy despite a surprise contraction in gross domestic product during the fourth quarter, which largely came from temporary factors.

Last week, initial claims for state unemployment benefits increased 38,000 to 368,000, the Labor Department said on Thursday.

The increase follows a week where new claims were at their lowest in five years and still points to an economy where employers are adding jobs, albeit at a lackluster pace.

"It's still consistent with modest employment growth," said Sam Bullard, an economist at Wells Fargo Securities in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Economists polled by Reuters had expected claims to increase to 350,000.

Claims have been very volatile this month, dropping sharply in the week ended January 12 and maintaining the trend in the following week. That was largely because the model used by the department to smooth out the seasonal variations has been unusually generous during the first three weeks of January.

The four-week moving average for new claims, a better measure of labor market trends, gained 250 to 352,000, suggesting a steady improvement in labor market conditions.

Last week's claims data has no bearing on January's employment report, which is scheduled for release on Friday, as it falls outside the survey period.

Prices for U.S. 30-year Treasuries pared gains, while S&P 500 futures, which were flat to negative before the data, rose a little.

Employers are expected to have added 160,000 jobs to their payrolls in January after an increase of 155,000 in December. The unemployment rate is seen holding steady at 7.8 percent.

In a separate report, the Commerce Department said American incomes rose 2.6 percent last month. That was the biggest increase since December 2004 and well above analysts' expectations for a 0.8 percent gain.

However, much of the increases in personal incomes over the last two months have been due to special dividends and accelerated bonuses to beat tax increases that were due to begin this month.

The big rise in incomes suggests total consumer spending power entered the new year on a stronger footing, even if the gains may not have been distributed evenly throughout the workforce.

The economy faces the threat of across-the-board spending cuts scheduled for March, as well as the possibility the government might default later this later year and trigger another recession.

After-tax income climbed 2.7 percent in December, the strongest since May 2008, while consumer spending rose 0.2 percent, just below the pace expected by analysts in a Reuters poll.

Excluding the one-time factors that boosted incomes in December, after-tax income rose 0.4 percent.

Planned layoffs at U.S. firms fell in December for the first time in four months, while the overall job-cut total in 2012 was the lowest since 1997, a third report showed on Thursday.

Employers announced 32,556 job cuts last month, the second lowest monthly total of 2012 and down 43 percent from 57,081 in November, according to the report from consultants Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc.

Kamnan Poh's family may seek royal pardon, says his son, Minister ...

Home ? politics ? Kamnan Poh's family may seek royal pardon, says his son, Minister Sonthaya

The Nation February 2, 2013 1:00 am

Somchai has been detained since his arrest on Wednesday after years on the run following corruption and murder convictions.

Sonthaya said family members were in the process of making several major decisions regarding Somchai - better known as Kamnan Poh - including seeking a pardon from His Majesty the King. "We have talked about the legal steps involved and what is to be done," he said.

All convicts have the right to seek a royal pardon after their final verdicts are reached, according to Kobkiat Kasiwiwat, deputy director-general of the Corrections Department.

Regarding a possible request that Somchai be allowed to serve his time at Chon Buri Prison, in his hometown, Kobkiat said the Corrections Department is authorised to make such concessions only in cases where the convict does not have a serious illness requiring close medical attention. "Chon Buri Prison has no doctors," he said. Somchai, 76, was believed to be returning home from a hospital at the time of his arrest. Considered an influential figure in his heyday, Somchai yesterday admitted to being the same person convicted in a corruption case, subjecting him immediately to a five-year-and-four-month prison term, a Criminal Court hearing heard yesterday.

A coming session will soon hear from Somchai on whether he is the same person convicted and sentenced to 30 years' imprisonment for masterminding the murder of a fellow kamnan, Chief Justice Thawee Prajuablarb said. He presided over the session confirming Somchai's identity and finalising the prison term in the corruption case.

The two days Somchai has spent at Bangkok Remand Prison would be deducted from Somchai's full term. Under Corrections Department regulations, he will be moved to Bang Khwang maximum-security prison, as the former detention facility can only be used to house convicts serving combined sentences of less than 15 years.

In the coming session, an arrest warrant for Somchai will also be revoked, due to his apprehension. The number of days he is detained during that process will also be deducted from his 30-year term in the murder case, Thawee said. The chief justice explained that sick inmates are allowed to be transferred to another prison only when corrections officials agree and their recommendations are approved by the court that sentenced the inmate.

Interior Minister Charupong Ruangsuwan said a new identity card for a person named Kim sae Tang had been falsely issued to Somchai.

Winai Phonphal, an active kamnan who owned the black Lexus SUV Somchai was travelling in at the time of his arrest and who was also in vehicle, will likely be disciplined as a civilian official under the Interior Ministry's supervision, Charupong said.

While his status as an elderly inmate qualifies Somchai for a reduction in his prison term or a total pardon, Somchai must serve at least one-third of his term. Whether this one-third provision will apply to the five-years-and-four-month corruption sentence or the 30-year murder sentence will depend on which imprisonment term commences first, according to a senior Corrections Department official.

After serving one-third of the sentence, the remaining combined time must be no more than five years, said deputy director-general Kittiphat Dechaphahul. However, any convict can begin a process to seek a royal pardon once the conviction is finalised, either through a Supreme Court verdict, or when a fugitive convict is arrested and their identity confirmed.

Sonthaya said that during his father's seven-year run from the law, Somchai had contacted the family through social networks and Skype, and sometimes through Internet-based chat applications available on mobile phones. The minister said he had not visited his father, but would do so once he was free from his ministerial duties. "In the meantime, all legal proceedings regarding my father will carry on through normal steps," he added.

"No one earns a privilege or stays above the law or regulations - I'd like to stress that." He repeated a statement by Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung, an influential party-list MP of the coalition-leading Pheu Thai Party, that Somchai's arrest would not affect his position as culture minister.

Despite Somchai's chronic diseases and advanced age, Sonthaya said the Khunpluem clan was not seeking Somchai's transfer to the provincial prison in Chon Buri, where Somchai and his family have long been based and where it established its political and business influence.

He said the clan celebrated Somchai's birthday in his absence on September 30 every year, which may have led to misunderstanding on the part of neighbours that Somchai showed up at the clan's family home regularly for the parties. "Also, my father never phoned in, as people are saying, but live footage of the birthday celebrations from inside the house and from the parties was always sent to my father to watch," Sonthaya said.

Suspension of prison term

Suspension of imprisonment is a new correctional method made possible under a 2010 justice ministerial regulation allowing inmates to be released before their term of imprisonment is complete. It is aimed at solving the prison overpopulation problem while giving prisoners an incentive to behave well.

Qualifications:

_ Inmates must be considered well behaved, industrious, or competent in their prison tasks; or have obtained an educational diploma through distance learning.

_ Inmates must have served no less than one-third of their combined prison terms.

_ Inmates sentenced to life imprisonment must have served no less than 10 years.

_ Old age can be a factor if the above conditions are met.
