Ancient Reindeer Engraving Among Britain's Oldest Rock Art (LiveScience.com)
A faint engraving of a reindeer in a South Wales cave looks to be among the oldest rock art known in Britain.
Researchers completed an analysis on July 27 that dated the image at roughly 12,600 years or older, putting it about on par with Britain's oldest known rock art.
The archeologist who discovered the engraving, George Nash, from the University of Bristol, said he believed it could be even older. [First Mammoth Image Discovered in Americas]
Nash discovered the engraving while visiting the cave with a group in September 2010. But dating ? using a technique that looks at the decay of traces of radioactive uranium and thorium in the stalagmite crust deposited over the engraving ? was only just completed.
The engraving's location is being kept secret to prevent vandalism, because the cave in which it is located is open to the public, said Nash, who also works with the environmental firm SLR consulting.
In 2003, the first British rock art from the Upper Paleolithic, which ended about 12,000 years ago, was discovered in Creswell Crags in England. A dating analysis put these engravings at roughly the same minimum age as Nash's more recent find. Rock art created since the end of the Upper Paleolithic is more common in Britain.
Although the engraving is difficult to make out, key elements, including its antlers, indicate it is a reindeer. Reindeer no longer live in Britain, but did during the latter part of the Upper Paleolithic, Nash said. ?
"The important thing is it tells us we are dealing with a society that is looking beyond hunting, fishing, gathering and appropriating from nature," he said. "There is a symbolic element to their lifestyle."
An excavation at the cave, conducted in the late 1950s, revealed flint tools, which may have been used to make such symbolic art, between 12,000 and 14,000 years old, indicating that the image could be older than the stalagmite crust that covers part of it, according to Nash.
Other experts have verified the engraving, but the results have yet to be published, Nash said. Nash is collaborating with researchers from the Open University and the National Museums Northern Island with support from the National Museum Wales and the Welsh historic environment service Cadw.

Microsoft Drops Into Social Gaming From the Cloud - Tricia Duryee ...
Microsoft has figured out a way to get into the social games business without having to make a single game.
The company instead is focusing on building tools to help other game developers get up and running quickly. In return for the assistance, the game developers must host their games on?Windows Azure, which is the name of Microsoft?s cloud technology.
Today, Amazon hosts many online games, including big Facebook games, developed by Zynga and others.
The benefit to using the cloud to host your game is that it can ramp up quickly if you see a huge spike in activity, and then scale back down, so you aren?t overpaying for equipment you aren?t using.
While Microsoft hosts some social games in the cloud already, this program is obviously trying to ramp up that business. This week at?Casual Connect in Seattle, Microsoft launched a toolkit for?developers, which provides the basic code for a number of back-end game technologies that all game developers typically must build, but don?t really want to spend a lot of time creating.
Among the components included are ways to track player achievements, ways to keep score, and guidance for using Facebook credits to monetize a game. The tools also show developers how to store user profiles and charge for in-app purchase. All the code and APIs are provided free, so developers can jump in at any level and get up and running in a short period of time, said Nathan Totten, a technical evangelist, who worked on the project.
To make the experience extremely easy, Microsoft even created a game with the help of Grant Skinner, a well-known developer in the space, to demonstrate how it all works.?The game is called Tankster, which is online for anyone to play. The game?includes messaging, wall posts and comments, and player achievements and game stats are presented on a leaderboard.

Strong Mobile Data Growth Pushes Up AT&T's Revenue (NewsFactor)
AT&T executives are smiling. The company's second-quarter results are strong, thanks, in part, to strong mobile broadband growth and record smartphone sales.
For the quarter ended June 30, AT&T's revenue totaled $31.5 billion. That's up more than $680 million, or 2.2 percent, versus the year-earlier quarter. The results mark AT&T's sixth consecutive quarter with a year-over-year revenue increase.
"Mobile broadband growth continues to be robust, and we are seeing encouraging signs in wireline revenues. This adds to our confidence as we look ahead," said Randall Stephenson, AT&T chairman and CEO. "Mobile broadband with IP infrastructure and cloud services are transforming our industry and are creating unprecedented opportunity. Our planned acquisition of T-Mobile USA will accelerate development of next-generation capabilities, and it will lay the groundwork for continued high-tech innovation for years to come."
Wireless Business Swells
AT&T posted a net gain in wireless subscribers of 1.1 million to reach 98.6 million in service. This included gains in every customer category. Additions for the quarter include postpaid net adds of 331,000.
AT&T also had a record quarter with branded computing subscribers, a new growth area for the company that includes tablets, air cards, MiFi devices, tethering plans, and other data-only devices. AT&T added 545,000 of these devices to reach four million, nearly twice as many as a year ago. Most of those new devices were tablets, with 377,000 added in the quarter, 30 percent of them postpaid.
In the second quarter, AT&T sold 5.6 million smartphones, a second-quarter record and the third-highest quarter ever. Smartphone sales also increased more than 43 percent year over year. Sales of non-iPhone smartphones more than doubled year over year. Nearly 70 percent of postpaid device sales were smartphones. During the quarter, 3.6 million iPhones were activated.
"Wireless data revenues -- driven by Internet access, access to applications, messaging and related services -- increased more than $1 billion, or 23.4 percent, from the year-earlier quarter to $5.4 billion," the company said. "AT&T's postpaid wireless subscribers on monthly data plans increased 19.5 percent over the past year. Compared to the year-earlier quarter, total text messages carried on the AT&T network increased 24 percent to 190.8 billion, and multimedia messages increased 54 percent to 4 billion."
Feature Phone Phasing Out
"The mobile data growth isn't necessarily people who were smartphone customers two years ago and are now deciding to buy bigger data packages. On the contrary, the market is shifting from feature phones to smartphones," said Avi Greengart, an analyst at Current Analysis.
"So consumers are buying smartphones and signing up for data plans, where in the past they resisted signing up for a data plan. Part of that is that consumers are seeing the value proposition. It's making sense to them. They are willing to pay for data when before they were not."
Although SMS revenues remain strong, consumers are buying data plans to tap into e-mail, Google searches, navigation and downloading and using apps that pull data. Beyond the demand for data, Greengart said declining smartphone prices are also helping.
"You can get a smartphone now for $40 to $99. You don't have to spend $199 to get a smartphone now. The smartphones are really edging in on the QWERTY messaging devices that were really popular a couple of years ago. When people are coming to the end of their contracts for their feature phones, they are buying smartphones instead."

Judge denies BP request for White House oil emails (AP)
NEW ORLEANS ? A federal magistrate refused Wednesday to order the White House to provide BP PLC with emails by a former top adviser to President Barack Obama about the administration's response to last summer's massive Gulf oil spill.
A lawyer for the oil giant had argued that emails by Carol Browner, Obama's former adviser on energy and climate matters, and three other officials in the Executive Office of the President could shed light on the White House's role in estimating the rate of oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico from the company's blown-out well.
But U.S. Magistrate Sally Shushan wrote that BP failed to show that it needed the White House's internal documents.
In a letter to Shushan, BP said it should be allowed to review the White House communications on the spill's flow rate because the data will help determine the company's financial liability.
"There is compelling evidence Ms. Browner was personally and substantially involved in the decision-making process that produced the United States' estimates of oil flow rates and oil spill volumes," the company wrote.
The Justice Department said BP's request was overly broad. BP's proposed search of White House emails would collect nearly everything that mentions BP or the blown-out well that triggered a deadly explosion on the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig, a government attorney argued.
"After months of cooperation and accommodation, the United States cannot entertain this request: it is a bridge too far," the Justice Department wrote in its own letter to the judge.
BP declined to comment on the judge's ruling. The White House referred requests for comment to the Justice Department. Browner's current employer, the Center for American Progress, said she could not be reached Wednesday.
Shushan is helping U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier oversee pretrial matters for thousands of consolidated court claims spawned by last year's rig blast, which killed 11 workers and spewed millions of gallons of oil.
Water pollution fines will be based on the gallons of oil spilled. BP has argued the government overestimated that amount by as much as 50 percent. The company's argument, if successful, could reduce fines under the Clean Water Act by up to $2.7 billion.
Browner had been accused of misrepresenting the findings of a federal analysis of where the oil went. During an August 2010 appearance on NBC's "Today Show," she said government scientists concluded more than three-quarters of the oil was "gone."
However, an independent commission appointed by the president said the analysis actually concluded that that oil could still be in the Gulf. The White House said Browner misspoke.
The presidential panel also faulted the White House for delaying a scientific report showing how much oil could reach the Gulf's shorelines. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration wanted to base its analysis on the worst-case spill number; White House science officials wanted the analysis to account for the oil burned, dispersed and evaporated.
Besides Browner, BP also sought emails by Jerry Miller, assistant director for ocean sciences at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy; Heather Zichal, deputy assistant to the president for energy and climate change; and Kathryn Moran, a senior policy analyst.
