Would You Let Your Data Sleep Over at Google's House?

A lingering cloud of Google vaporware finally condensed recently into an actual product. Google Drive has been a subject of speculation for years, but now the company's own cloud storage service is here for real. Google Drive lets anyone store a few gigabytes worth of data on Google's servers.

Ask Engadget: best 'money is no object' laptop?

Image

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is coming to us from Chris, who simply has too much money to blow on a super-laptop. If you're looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

"I sold my business and I want to replace my laptop [HP Pavilion G6] with a completely unreasonably expensive top of the line machine. I want it to do everything I do (gaming, coding, web design) all at the same time. Apart from the fact I need two hard drive bays, I'm completely open-minded, so what should I be buying? Thank you!"

Quell your gnashing teeth, members of the 99 percent, he's done well for himself and now he needs our help. We were able to trick out an Alienware M18x to full capacity for $6,700 -- with an over-clocked 4GHz Intel Core i7 CPU, 32GB of RAM, two 2GB NVIDIA GTX 675M GPUs in SLI mode and 1.2TB of SSD RAID storage. That's the benchmark, folks: who out there can find something more powerful?

Mel Gibson Jokes About Latest Rant With Jay Leno: I've Got a Bit of a Temper ...

Mel Gibson appeared on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno last night and surprisingly, he willingly brought up his most recent secretly recorded meltdown.

He joked about it repeatedly, no less.

The now-infamous Mel Gibson rant, in which he RAGED at Joe Eszterhas (and was taped in his own home, unwittingly, by Eszterhas' son), was over the top, he conceded. Still, Mel believes his privacy was violated and his actions were "justified." Why?

Mel Gibson on The Tonight Show

Eszterhas' script for The Maccabees was non-existent, then awful, Mel said, proceeding to slam the screenwriter for selling him out hardcore in a nine-page letter released online - before he leaked the audiotape.

"If he put half as much time and effort and creativity and imagination into a screenplay, which he was supposed to write, as he did into that letter, we wouldn't be having this conversation," Gibson said of Joe Eszterhas.

As for the rant itself, Leno asked, "So what were you doing, just swearing at the guy?"

"Yeah, pretty much," Mel deadpanned, before adding self-deprecatingly, "Maybe you don't know this about me, but I've got a little bit of a temper."

Frame rate debate rages on with 48 fps projection of 3D Hobbit footage

Image

With his use of Red cameras, 3ality rigs, and high frame rate 3D technology, no one can accuse Peter Jackson of being stuck in the past. Need more evidence of his anti-luddism? He just gave the first projection of footage from his 3D opus "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" in its full 48 fps glory at the CinemaCon convention in Las Vegas. With the public having endured 80 years of 24 fps film-watching, Jackson appealed to viewers to allow their eyes to adjust to the doubled rate during the ten minute screening. But the reaction showed that public acceptance might take a while. One projectionist compared it to made-for-TV fare, and others referenced Mexican soap-operas and TruMotion. The reply to these criticisms by Jackson (and James Cameron) has always been that 3D is better suited to faster frame rates than 2D -- making it more immersive, reducing headaches and improving stereoscopy. We'll have to wait for the film's release this December to find out whether he's right, or if this attempt at high frame speeds will go the way of Showscan.

Just How I Feel? ? Monkey Soup

So I think I have my brain around one of the things that I have been thinking about. ?It is my own opinion, and it is possible that my thoughts on some of this could be swayed, but these are a few things that have been nagging me in the back of my head.

Let?s talk about a few things adoption related.

It is a hard decision to decide to adopt, however you have come to the decision. ?Whether you came to the decision to adopt due to infertility, fear of childbirth, or whatever other reason that could have swayed you to decide to adopt, it is not an easy decision, and I should hope is not a light decision made by anyone.

There are a few things that I think most people know. ?Adoption is typically not an inexpensive option to grow your family. ?I think most people at least have a clue that domestic or international adoption is a really expensive way to grow your family. ?I get it. ?I do. ?I just really hate when people talk about it. ?It is expensive. ?We all get it. ?You are most likely paying an agency to represent you and an attorney and sometimes a separate agency to do your home study, and you have most likely researched them to death before signing with them. ?I just don?t think it?s right to talk about the cost. ?I don?t think it?s right to ask for money to fund your adoption. ?Again, this is my opinion.

I would hate to have my child know that I had to have a benefit, or a paypal link or any other way of asking for money to fund their adoption. ?Now, I know many people could say, ?you adopted through foster care, you have no room to discuss this.? ?Money had no part in our decision to adopt through foster care. ?We had originally decided to adopt an older child, this ultimately isn?t what happened for us, as you know, but this is what had brought us to the decision to adopt from foster care.

Due to foster care typically being a better option for children in need of a family, there are few, if any, actual orphanages in the US. ?Our foster care system ?has some issues, but I do tend to believe that it is a better option than a typical orphanage type situation.

We personally felt that if there were older children here in the US that needed a permanent family, this was what we wanted to do. ?We could have adopted an older child from another country. ?In fact, we even seriously looked into it. ?My Aunt was very involved with an orphanage in the Ukraine. ?She was and still is, even after her death, a large benefactor to this particular orphanage. ?She visited, worked with the children and the directors, to the point that when she died the director of the orphanage actually flew to Illinois to attend her funeral.

I think part of my thought on this,is that I wouldn?t want my child, or any child for that matter to think that they had to be ?bought.? ?They are children. ?Granted the cost of the adoption is not actually ?buying? the child, it is the actual process for the adoption that costs money, but imagine, if you were the child and found out later that there were silent auctions, or an event held to ?pay? for you, or paypal button?s set up for your ?cost.? ?A child wouldn?t necessarily ?get? that they weren?t paid for. ?Now, other people may feel differently, again, this is just my thought on this process. ?I would be open to your thoughts.

The other thing that has been bothering me is I have seen several hopeful adoptive parents going on rants about how their agency isn?t ?showing their profile enough? or they ?hate their fucking agency.? ?I just can?t see how publicly announcing your disdain for your agency is going to help get your profile shown. ?This is like stating that you hate your work, or your boss, and then wondering why you aren?t advancing in your company. ?I think it is a really bad idea. ?You have entered into a professional relationship with your agency, and acting like a spoiled teenager, is not going to help you. ?It can take a long time to be referred to a potential placement. ?It can take a long time from your home study, to approval, to actual placement of a child in your home. ?This is true for all kinds of adoptions. ?If you went into this thinking that you were going to get a child within four or five months of getting your approval, I think you are delusional.

Some families get placements sooner than others. ?Some families get them later than other?s. ?From our actual licensing to our call for Mea it was almost two and a half years. ?If we would have given up, we wouldn?t have our daughter. ?I would kindly remind placement workers every so often that our goal was to adopt, and I think that kept us in mind at the very least.

If you are a blogger, or have a Facebook page, or you Tweet, keep in mind that you have a public online profile, that most people with a computer can find. ?If you are bashing your agency on FB, or tweeting about it, or writing on your blog about it, people can see that. ?Your agency, your workers, everyone. ?Including the parents that are considering adoption as a choice for their unborn child. ?Would you choose someone who had made statements like this? I have a potty mouth and I can be a bit of a hot head, and I know it, but I know where and when to keep my mouth shut.

?It is a wise thing to be polite; consequently, it is a stupid thing to be rude. To make enemies by unnecessary and willful incivility, is just as insane a proceeding as to set your house on fire. For politeness is like a counter?an avowedly false coin, with which it is foolish to be stingy.?
??Arthur Schopenhauer

Again, these are just my thoughts, on a couple of adoption related subjects. ?They potentially could be swayed, but I also think it is something to give some thought too. ?If the shoe was on the other foot, and you were the mother considering adoption as a choice for your unborn child, would you want to hear some of these things? ?If you are hoping for an open adoption for your child, how would you see this potential family for your child?

These are usually placed close to search final results, wherever an advertiser pays a specific quantity to guests who click on these links or banners and land on the advertiser?s internet page.

In essence, PPC marketing is all about bidding for the top or top position on search engine benefits and listings. Advertisers do this by getting or bidding on keyword phrases which might be relevant to their goods or solutions ? the higher the bid, the larger the spot on the search results, the a lot more the men and women will discover the ad (and click on it) to head to their websites (this is why many people call it ?keyword auctioning?). Advertisers would then spend the bidding price each and every time a visitor clicks by means of the web site.

PPC marketing is also recognized beneath the following names/variations:

Pay per placement

Pay per ranking
Pay per place
Cost per click (CPC)

PPC advertising is usually completed with all the following standard procedures:

1. Setting up an account and/or deposit funds.

(a convert) and comprehensive a transaction (either by purchasing your item or subscribing for the service that you just are providing.

Widen your reach. PPC marketing supplies further site visitors to your site, apart from the organic or ?organic? search engines like google.

Track your investment. PPC marketing tends to make utilization of a tracking method that will figure out specifically who comes towards the website and what they do as soon as they arrive ? the length of their remain on the web site and also the quantity of pages (which includes the actual pages) that they view. They are beneficial tools in determining statistics this kind of as return on investment (ROI), acquisition cost-per-visitor, and conversion prices (the percentage of visitors that are converted into buyers or leads).

2. Remain inside of the price range. Determine your everyday or monthly budget; and stay with it. This means retaining your spending budget in mind, avoiding bidding wars if feasible.

3. Bid just correct. Know how to bid appropriate ? a bid that is as well higher can exhaust all of your money, while a bid which is also very low could make you drop that spot.

4. Watch the bottom line. Measure your profit margin against your investing or expenditures. Know when to quit and terminate your PPC program ? in the event you invest a lot more on marketing but have tiny or no revenue at all.

5. Discover the proper keywords. Choose which keyword phrases to opt and bid for. Do some keyword analysis, either by truly taking a look at existing search terms or with the utilization of on the web keyword suggestion tools, to understand which terms are largely utilised when looking for objects which can be associated for your enterprise. Concentrate on specific keywords and phrases, not on basic ones.

Babies flick 'anti-risk switch' in women but not men

ScienceDaily (Apr. 17, 2012) ? Unlike women, men don't curb certain risk-taking behaviours when a baby is present, a new psychology study at the University of Warwick suggests. Whereas women are significantly more cautious when they are partnered with small children in a gambling game measuring their attitude to risk, men don't substantially alter their willingness to take a chance.

Researchers suggested this could be due to evolutionary forces that select for men who are more competitive and risk-seeking in order to establish status and women who are more risk-averse in order to protect their offspring.

Scientists at the University of Warwick and the University of Basel observed students playing a gambling game while alone and while paired with either an image of an attractive man, woman or baby with whom they imagined they would share their winnings.

A second less surprising finding of the study was that men took more risks when partnered with other men -- consistent with theories suggesting that men are driven to compete with other men in order to maximise their reproductive opportunities.

However men did not increase their risk-taking behaviour when paired with a woman, a fact researchers believed was down to the co-operative design of the game where participants shared their winnings with their partner.

This particular finding has parallels in the real world where studies have shown that men in committed relationships show less risky behaviour as they no longer need to compete with other males to gain a woman's attention.

Dr Thomas Hills of the Department of Psychology at the University of Warwick said: "To our knowledge this is the first study to look directly at the effect of babies on male and female risk-taking.

"Our attitudes to risk form a big part of our personality and determine our behaviour in all sorts of areas -- for example how we approach financial investments or what leisure activities we indulge in.

"Even though the women in the study were not the mothers of the babies they paired with, just having a baby involved in the game was enough to substantially change their behaviour.

"It's as if babies turn off women's a willingness to take a risk -- but interestingly the same doesn't apply to men."

The study was published in the journal Evolution and Human Behavior.

Eighty undergraduate students (40 male and 40 female) took part in the study.

The participants accumulated cash while pumping up a computer-simulated balloon which could explode randomly at any moment.

As the game progressed, participants had to decide whether to stop pumping and "bank" the winnings -- or whether to continue and risk the balloon exploding and all the cash being lost.

From BPC Technologies, Inc. Wiki

If your computer is running slow, we usually think that it is time to replace or upgrade our PC. However , the reason behind your slow computer may lay in your Windows registry being too crowded with unnecessary entries if this is the case, then a registry cleaner will solve the problem. As you use your computer, your registry gets filled with unnecessary entries and this causes your computer to slow down. A registry cleaner will remove unnecessary files in the registry and repair any errors so that your computer will begin performing well again. After using the registry cleaner, you may be surprised at how your computer starts running as if it were new again, and replacing it is no longer necessary. While there are many registry cleaners available, we will focus on exactly what has been called by users as one of the best in the market, CCleaner. While RegMachine is easier to use and Registry Medic has better technical support, CCleaner has one big advantage over the two of them: it is freeware that can readily be downloaded. But of course, the fact that it is free is not the only reason it is highly ranked - CCleaner also has a good search engines among registry cleaner utilities almost as powerful as the RegCure. The software's scan engine performs two total scans - the first is the conventional scan done by almost all cleaners that identifies and eliminated unwanted files in the registry. The second scan, however , filters out certain suspect files from the first scan and examines if issues would arise if they are removed. This confirmatory second scan thus safeguards the sincerity of your Windows O. H. by not accidentally removing useful files. This dual scan feature is what lifts CCleaner's rankings above the rest but still is not even close to exactly what RegCure does. RegCure has his power regularly updated with the latest database of registry errors to ensure that your PC is fully protected. And provides a real technical support. Richard A. Meizu MX Quad-core launching with Android 4.0 in June, gets 32GB and 64GB flavors

Meizu MX Quad-core launching with Android 4.0 in June, gets 32GB and 64GB flavors
Can't say we're surprised, but Meizu's finally giving us the lowdown on the quad-core variant of its flagship Android smartphone. Simply dubbed the MX Quad-core, this new device will be powered by a Cortex-A9-based, 32nm HKMG (High-K Metal Gate) quad-core Samsung Exynos chip -- no word on the clock speed or RAM, but we're betting our money on the Exynos 4412 that goes up to 1.5GHz. Meizu claims this will save up to 20 percent of CPU power consumption compared to its dual-core counterpart. Also, the battery will be bumped up from 1,600mAh to 1,700mAh -- we shall see how much difference this makes when we eventually get our hands on the phone. And yes, in addition to the original white back cover, you'll be able to swap it with one of the five optional colored covers pictured above.

On the software side you'll get a Meizu-customized Ice Cream Sandwich system (aka Flyme OS), though it isn't clear whether the company will stick to its old promise of simultaneously releasing a vanilla ROM. The rest of the new phone's identical to the dual-core MX, especially the 4-inch 960 x 640 ASV display and the eight-megapixel BSI camera. While there's still no microSD expansion, here's some good news to make up for this flaw: the base model starts at 32GB and it'll cost the same as the current 16GB MX! In other words, come June the unsubsidized MX Quad-core will go from ¥2,999 (US$480) in China and HK$3,099 (US$400) in Hong Kong; and then there'll also be a 64GB version priced at ¥3,999 (US$635) and HK$4,099 (US$530), respectively. Meanwhile, starting today, the original MX is reduced to ¥2,399 (US$380) and HK$2,599 (US$335). Press release after the break.

Now, with Meizu proudly claiming to have the world's first smartphone to utilize the quad-core Exynos chip, we wonder where Samsung's at with its own unicorn device?

Soap Dish: Days of Lives Mass Firings

It is Soap Dish time again my friends and this week I am dishing on the recent firings at Days of Our Lives. Oh yes there is going to be a mass exodus this summer and not by the actor/actresses choice. This week the new head writers at DOOL came in and well started to clean house. The story broke earlier in the week with many of the fans and the actors themselves taking to Twitter to talk about what I am calling a bloodbath. Christie Clark?(Carrie),?Patrick Muldoon?(Austin),?Matthew Ashford?(Jack) and?Sarah Joy Brown (Madison) were all given their walking papers. Let me start first with Mathew, this is like what the tenth time the show has done this to him. His talented was so wasted this time and I certainly hope that next time he thinks twice before accepting an offer to return. On that same note if I were Melissa Reeves I would be watching my back because I think it is only a matter of time before she is given the pink slip. As for Christie and Patrick although I love their characters I don?t feel they were given a stellar storyline either. It was kind of a been [...]

Image
We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is from is from is from Joe, who needs to backup half a terabyte of data to the cloud, as you do. If you're looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.
"I'm looking for an online backup solution for between 100GB, up to 500GB of data. New options are popping up everywhere recently, but what's the best cloud storage backup solution that'd allow for easy drag-and-drop backup, syncing across multiple computers both Mac and Windows, access from Android devices and at a reasonable price? Thanks!"
Well, he doesn't want much, does he? Just world-class storage, universal device access and all for a rock-bottom price. There's plenty of contenders in this particular competition, from Dropbox all the way through to, erm, Box. It's kinda clear that Joe's not just backing up his holiday photos, so even enterprise-level offerings are worth suggesting. Still, the floor's now open to you, so fire away.

Cowon Plenue Z2: US pricing, availability and hands-on impressions

cowon plenue z2
Just mention the company's name, and a pair of things come to mind: world-beating sound quality, and above-average prices. Such is life when you're Cowon, which has informed us that its Plenue Z2 portable media player will be shipping to the US of A in May. Based on details shared to us from a Cowon spokesperson, "early May" is the targeted release window, which makes sense given the unit's FCC debut back in December of 2011. We've learned that it'll ship in 16GB (white only) and 32GB (black only) sizes, with prices set for $279.99 and $319.99 in order of mention. As for specs? Glad you asked. Rather than relying on one of Cowon's proprietary operating systems, the Z2 will ship with Android 2.3.5 (Gingerbread), while measuring 62.8- x 116.5- x 11.8-millimeters, weighing 116 grams and boasting a 3.7-inch (800 x 480) capacitive touchpanel.

On the audio side, you'll get a typical 20Hz to 20,000Hz frequency range, 29mW + 29mW maximum outlet and a 95dB signal-to-noise ratio. There's also an HDMI output, a microSD expansion slot, built-in FM radio tuner, 802.11b/g/n WiFi module, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and an internal microphone. The outfit claims that this guy can last some 22 hours when playing back music alone, while video junkies will see 8.5 hours of their favorite Family Guy clips before needing a rejuvenation session. Not surprisingly, the Z2 also supports a smorgasbord of file formats, including AVI, WMV, ASF, MP4, MKV, MPG, DAT, 3GP -- tired yet? -- DivX, XviD, H.264, WMA, OGG, PMC and FLAC. grabio1Grabio has been around for about a year but they've recently update the app and added a number of features. What does it do? Essentially it's a mobile Craigslist with notifications and location-based searches for classified listings. You can enter any neighborhood, do a quick search, and pick up a broken girls bicycle seat or a gently used full body cast for a few bucks. Pretty slick, eh? Founded by Horatiu Boeriu and Chris Popa, both currently living in Chicago, the company is bootstrapped and went through a number of iterations before it settled on its current incarnation. At launch they saw 5,000 users, although that number is creeping up.
