More often than not, the theatre is a place for silence and careful observation. That?s not the case, however, with Raleigh Little Theatre?s daring and fun presentation of The Rocky Horror Show. Audience members are invited to participate as their comfort levels allow. Brave guests can get up and dance the time warp, shout out ?Asshole? and ?Slut? every time they hear the names of the main characters Brad (Kaine Riggan) and Janet (Sarah Winter), respectively. Plus, there are spots for bubble-blowing, bell-ringing, and more, all made super-convenient thanks to the ?participation bags? being sold before each show.
While participating certainly makes the show even more of a wild ride, it?s not necessary for ?absolute pleasure.? Both die-hard fans of the 1975 film upon this 1973 musical and newcomers alike are sure to be drawn in by a stellar cast, outrageous costumes, and hilariously original choreography. For those who don?t know the story, it?s all about what happens when newlyweds Brad and Janet happen upon a strange castle and its kooky, sexually charged inhabitants. Telling any more would spoil the experience of ?popping your cherry,? common fan vernacular for seeing the show for the first time.
Riggan is dorkily believable as nerdy, sanctimonious Brad Majors, and Winter?s Janet belts out the show?s tunes with confidence and ease, even when she?s stripped down to her skivvies. Evelyn McCauley?s librarian-esque narrator is a surprise standout, adding her own brand of spunk to the role and not being afraid to sass back at overly zealous audience members at Saturday night?s performance. Brent Wilson is fun and even a little sexy as the scheming Riff Raff, and David Adams pulls a double-whammy in dual roles as rock and roller Eddie (portrayed by Meatloaf in the film) and Dr. Scott (whom the audience is instructed to boo regularly).
Last but not least, James Ilsley successfully turns his Frank ?N? Furter into a sexy, fierce, ?scary, and downright fabulous drama queen. The fact that he rocks heels and barely-there attire, managing to look incredibly sensuous all the while, doesn?t hurt either. While this show might not be for everyone, it?s where all the cool kids are going. Don?t miss it!
