Who's Next?: Singer/Songwriters On The Up | Neon Tommy

Adele. Frank Ocean. Lana Del Rey. Bon Iver. Kimbra. Gotye. Foster The People. Azalea Banks. The Lumineers. Ed Sheeran. Alex Clare. Mumford & Sons.?

These are some of the fairly new and very talented artists who I imagine you?ve heard about or whose songs you?ve heard repeatedly on the radio, have been played for you by Pandora, recommended to you by Spotify, or that you?ve searched for on YouTube within the last year.?

Don?t believe me about the last one? Take a trip to LA Lives? Starbucks (or any Starbucks for that matter); during this writer?s latest visit, the band's ?Babel? (the title and first song off the folk group?s new album) and ?I Will Wait? were just played within the last 8 minutes while I waited for a coffee. They are also selling the album.

Or turn to 98.7 FM; it plays the latter tune about every 10 minutes. That?s a hell of a lot of ?waiting? while driving in LA.?

From ?Thinkin? Bout You? to ?Pumped Up Kicks? a handful of artists have topped the charts universally and thus, have become fan favorites.?

But if you?re looking for some new artists?new styles, voices and techniques?or new artists that simply emulate your favorite legends, you?re in luck.

2012 has been a progressive (and to some a detrimental) year for the music industry.

And no, I?m not referring to YouTube commentators who write things like ?Thumbs up if Twilight sent you here,? or ?OMG Justin Bieber and Nicki Minaj have over 54,000,000 views?people don?t appreciate good music anymore!,? an example of how easily music can be accessed and new artists discovered today.

But also, an indication of what audiences seem to be craving: ?real? or ?good? music.?

Considering how personal preference and opinion dominate the arts, we could discuss for hours about what constitutes ?good? music. Our opinions do not, however, determine how popular artists become. But upgrades in technology do replace some of the power back in our hands, or rather, our ears.?

That said; grab a pen and a piece of paper. Excuse me?I mean, load your "Stickies" or prepare your navigation bar?here are some artists that if you haven?t heard about already you should check out or stalk on YouTube (like I do) for days at a time.

Ladies first:?

Lucy Rose

After moving to London at the age of 18, Lucy Rose was still unknown and unlistened to. Neglecting an education in Geography at University College London, the 22-year-old English singer/songwriter from Warwickshire decided to practice and perform with other artists. She began with the Bombay Bicycle Club.

Today she plays with a band of four (guitarist, drummer, bassist, and multi-instrumentalist). With only four singles out, Vogue?s Freddie Campion suggested Rose to be ?one of indie music break out stars for 2012.? Her first album ?Like I Used To? was released on August 24th and her popularity continues to mount.?

ZZ Ward

The Abington, PA singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Zsuzanna Eva Ward made a quick transition to the West Coast after growing up in Roseburg, Oregon. Her distinctful rhythmic and soulful voice represents all her time spent picking through her father?s blues and her brother?s hip-hop collections.

By age 12, Ward was singing in her father?s blues band and by 16 she was singing with hip-hop groups in Eugene. Her next stop: Los Angeles, with a hope of breaking into the music business. And that she has. Her debut album with Boardwalk Entertainment Group and Hollywood Records ?TIL THE CASKET DROPS? was released on October 16th. Featuring collaboration with rising hip-hop star Kendrick Lamar, the album has received many thumbs ups and earned the Etta loving singer a solid fan base.?

Emeli Sand?

?How incredible is she?? ? Adele

Enough said.?

Elle King?

Duffy, meet Adele, and the two of you meet your triplet, Elle King? except she?s not British. Elle King (born Tanner Elle Schneider) is an American musician who raspily combines country, soul, rock and blues all in one. Born in LA bur raised in Ohio, the engaging vocalist currently resides in Brooklyn, NY.

Her four-song debut, the "Elle King EP," was released on RCA/fat Possum Records on June 12, 2012. ?Playing for Keeps? was an immediate hit as it was chosen as the theme song for VH1?s guilty pleasure series, "Mob Wives (Chicago)." Singe the EP release, King has toured with Train and new artists like Of Monsters and Men (?Little Talks?) and Michael Kiwanuka. King is currently working on her debut full-length album, with an early 2013 release date. And I believe it?ll be worth the way. ?

Mary Lambert?

Hailing from Sequin, Washington, singer/songwriter and spoken word artist Mary Lambert is talented beyond measures. The 23-year-old lesbian ginger has already collaborated with hip-hop duo Macklemore and Ryan Lewis on their heart-wrenching track supporting gay marriage ?Same Love.?

Her five song EP ?Letters Don?t Talk? encourages women to love themselves despite their society professed flaws (?I Know Girls?), each of us to love and to love freely (?My Moon?), but is not remised to mention the dangers of loving deeply (?This Heart?) and thus has several reaching for a box of tissues in a matter of 20 minutes. One can only imagine how heart wrenching an entire album will be. ??

And here?s a riveting taste of her combination of music and spoken word.?

LP

The Los Angeles based singer began writing songs for others such as Rihanna?s ?Cheers? and Christina Aguilera?s ?Beautiful People? from the movie "Burlesque." And while she found that rewarding, her simply sleek style, luscious brunette curls and powerful voice belonged on stage.

Her six song EP ?Live At EastWest Studios? (April 2012) features ?Into the Wild? a rockin? track that was featured on a Citibank Card TV commercial. At the Troubadour last January it was evident why LP was listed as an artist to watch in 2012.

Gentlemen:

James Vincent McMorrow

If McMorrow isn?t proof of the benefits of progressions in technology for musicians, than I don?t know who else would be. After 5 months in an isolated house in Ireland, McMorrow self recorded and developed a breath taking collections of song that emulate the delicate tone and gripping lyrics of Bon Iver and James Blake in February 2010.

His first album ?Early In The Morning? (2012) has done well and his cover of Chris Isaak?s ?Wicked Game? was featured in season 5 of CW?s drama "Gossip Girl," but both are only the beginning for McMorrow. His intricate harmonies and lucid lyricism are addictive. And after one listen to the album, you?ll be asking for the next? at least I was (even after the tenth).

Although a bit lengthy, the production and performances in this video allow you to see and hear just how talented McMorrow is.?

Michael Kiwanuka

When Bob Marley said ?The good thing about music is that when it hits you, you feel no pain,? he wasn?t talking about Michael Kiwanuka. His voice is painfully flawless, flowing with honest and raw emotion. Often compared to Ben Harper, the Ugandan born, British raised artist became self-aware and thus self-confident in his skills after discovering that Jimi Hendrix was black. Bob Dylan, Otis Redding and Bill Withers also influenced him.

The folk/modern soul singer participated in rock bands at school when hew as 16 that progressed his musicianship. His EP ?Tell Me A Tale: The Isle of Wight Sessions" was released on June 14th, 2011 and Kiwanuka has become a fan favorite of Interscope Records.?

Matt Corby

Compared to Nick Drake and Jeff Buckley, the Australian sensation has some high expectations set for him, but there's no doubt that he?ll surpass them all. His unique voice can be found on his 2009 EP ?Song For?? and his engaging lyrics on the haunting 2010 EP ?Transition To Colour.?

Corby spent 2011 touring, performing for sold out audiences in London, Texas and Australia. His newly released EP ?Into The Flame,? takes his listeners on a personal journey, displaying Corby?s growth and thus showcases his vocal and artistic talent even more. Corby is currently performing on his ?Winter Tour?, a sold out national tour around Australia.?

Allen Stone?

With praise from USA Today and the New York Times who has compered his music to that of legends like Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway and Bill Withers no doubt that the 25-year-old singer/songwriter from Chewelah, Washington is talented. But his curly blond hair and thick-rimmed glasses help him identify as ?a hippie with soul.??And he undoubtedly has an overwhelming amount of soul.

A preacher?s kid, Stone got his start in church. Although no longer shouting from the pulpit, Stone?s music has the ability to reach a wide array of people. His first self-titled album, released off of his own stickystones label in October 2011 reached the Top 10 of Billboard?s Heat seekers chart and then entered the Top 5 of iTunes? R&B/Soul charts. Stone has appeared on ?Conan?, ?Jimmy Kimmel Live?, ?Last Call with Carson Daly? and ?Live from Daryl?s House. Now apart of ATO Records, his smooth soul is bound to reach an unlimited audience.?

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis

In 2008, rapper Macklemore and producer Ryan Lewis created their debut EP ?VS.? As a self-reflective album, Macklemore?s personal experience with drug addiction and rehabilitation is explained through ?Otherside.? In ?Wing$,? Macklemore raps about consumerism and themes of identity through childhood desire to have the best basketball sneakers.

Today, the Seattle native and his producer are selling out shows from coast to coast, including their recent appearance at LA?s The Graveyard. While you might recognize ?Same Love? considering it?s impactful message and immediate popularity, here?s an uplifting track about self-identity and pride.?

Here?s a collaboration of three of the above artists (Macklemore and Lewis featuring Stone).?

All of the artists albums or EPs are available to buy and listen to on iTunes and Spotify.?

Sandy and storm surge pose 'worst case scenario'

(AP) ? The projected storm surge from Hurricane Sandy is a "worst case scenario" with devastating waves and tides predicted for the highly populated New York City metro area, government forecasters said Sunday.

The more they observe it, the more the experts worry about the water ? which usually kills and does more damage than winds in hurricanes.

In this case, seas will be amped up by giant waves and full-moon-powered high tides. That will combine with drenching rains, triggering inland flooding as the hurricane merges with a winter storm system that will worsen it and hold it in place for days.

Louis Uccellini, environmental prediction chief for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told The Associated Press that given Sandy's due east-to-west track into New Jersey, that puts the worst of the storm surge just north in New York City, Long Island and northern New Jersey. "Yes, this is the worst case scenario," he said.

In a measurement of pure kinetic energy, NOAA's hurricane research division on Sunday ranked the surge and wave "destruction potential" for Sandy ? just the hurricane, not the hybrid storm it will eventually become ? at 5.8 on a 0 to 6 scale. The damage expected from winds will be far less, experts said. Weather Underground meteorologist Jeff Masters says that surge destruction potential number is a record and it's due to the storm's massive size.

"You have a lot of wind acting over a long distance of water for hundreds of miles" and that piles the storm surge up when it finally comes ashore, Masters said. Even though it doesn't pack much power in maximum wind speed, the tremendous size of Sandy ? more than 1,000 miles across with tropical storm force winds ? adds to the pummelling power when it comes ashore, he said.

The storm surge energy numbers are bigger than the deadly 2005 Hurricane Katrina, but that can be misleading. Katrina's destruction was concentrated in a small area, making it much worse, Masters said. Sandy's storm surge energy is spread over a wider area. Also, Katrina hit a city that is below sea level and had problems with levees.

National Hurricane Center Director Rick Knabb said Hurricane Sandy's size means some coastal parts of New York and New Jersey may see water rise from 6 to 11 feet from surge and waves. The rest of the coast north of Virginia can expect 4 to 8 feet of surge.

The full moon Monday will add 2 to 3 inches to the storm surge in New York, Masters said.

"If the forecasts hold true in terms of the amount of rainfall and the amount of coastal flooding, that's going to be what drives up the losses and that's what's going to hurt," said Susan Cutter, director of the hazards and vulnerability research institute at the University of South Carolina.

Cutter said she worries about coastal infrastructure, especially the New York subways, which were shutting down Sunday night.

Klaus Jacob, a Columbia University researcher who has advised the city on coastal risks, said, "We have to prepare to the extent we can, but I'm afraid that from a subway point of view, I think it's beyond sheer preparations. I do not think that there's enough emergency measures that will help prevent the subway from flooding."

Knabb said millions of people may be harmed by inland flooding.

A NOAA map of inland and coastal flood watches covers practically the entire Northeast: all of Maryland, New Jersey, Delaware, and Connecticut; most of Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts and Vermont, and parts of northeastern Ohio, eastern Virginia, North Carolina, and western New Hampshire.

Along the mid-Atlantic coast, storm surge is already starting to build, Uccellini said. NOAA's Coastal Services Center chief Margaret Davidson said to expect "bodacious impacts" from both surge and inland flooding.

The surge ? in which water steadily increases from the ocean? will be worst in the areas north of where Sandy comes ashore.

New York will have the most intense storm surge if Sandy comes ashore anywhere in New Jersey, Uccellini said. Only if it arrives farther south, such as Delaware, will New York see a slightly, only slightly, smaller storm surge.

In general, areas to the south and west of landfall will get the heaviest of rains. Some areas of Delaware and the Maryland and Virginia peninsula will see a foot of rain over the several days the storm parks in the East, Uccellini said. The rest of the mid-Atlantic region may see closer to 4 to 8 inches, NOAA forecasts.

The good news about inland flooding is that the rivers and ground aren't as saturated as they were last year when Hurricane Irene struck, causing nearly $16 billion in damage, much of it from inland flooding in places like Vermont, Uccellini and Masters said.

The storm, which threatens roughly 50 million in the eastern third of the country, began as three systems. Two of those ? an Arctic blast from the north and a normal winter storm front with a low-pressure trough? have combined. Hurricane Sandy will meld with those once it comes ashore, creating a hybrid storm with some of the nastier characteristics of a hurricane and a nor'easter, experts have said.

Moneycation: Four keys to finding the right office space for your ...

By Christina Adams

When you are running a business, you want to make sure that you are easily accessible. If you are not in a prominent location, your customers will not know where to find you and you will not generate any drive by traffic. The right location is essential to the success of your business. There are specific considerations that you want to keep in mind when you are searching for that perfect office space.

?

Location

If you rent an office space that is in a run down, sparse part of town, you cannot reasonably expect to get a lot of business. Location is half the importance of your business. Keeping this in mind, you want to pick a location that is in a busy area of town, with moderate traffic. Even if you do not offer walk in services, being visible will allow you to get your name out there.

?

Price

It is not worth sacrificing half your monthly budget for that prime corner space if you do not have the business to sustain it. Pricing is important and you want to remain within your budget without going overboard. You should only allot about 15-20% of your monthly budget towards rent or mortgage expenses for your office space.

?

Size matters

Depending on how many employees you have, you will want to rent or buy a space that is able to accommodate all of you. You want to be able to maneuver and not worry about running out of space. You should also rent a slightly bigger space than your needs allot for, if you can. This will give your business the room it needs to grow without making the office cramped.

?

Work with a real estate agent

Sometimes, it is not enough to scout out an office space on your own. Oftentimes, office or commercial space is not rented by an individual, but through a real estate office. Working with a real estate agent will open up the idea to your possibilities. In addition, once you give your specs to the agent, they will only show you properties that meet your needs ? including your budget. This way, your search is made relatively simple; instead of difficult when you try to do it on your own.Searching out the right real estate space may take some time. Ideally, you should begin searching for your office space a few months before you plan to move in to give yourself that valuable time.

Christina Adams knows a thing or two about?commercial real estate leasing, having worked in B2B real estate for nearly 10 years. She writes on behalf of ThinkBusinessSpace.com.

In-house document management for small businesses

Bankers BoxBack in 1917, the first Bankers Box? turned office recordkeeping on its head. ?As the name suggests it was designed for bankers to manage bank records.? Soon, however, it was adopted by businesses of all kinds to organize and archive records.

Fast forward 95 years. The world has changed, but a few things haven?t. One thing that hasn?t changed is the need to manage documents and records in your business.

In fact, records management has become an even bigger concern in our modern world. For example, litigation is a fact of life in business today.? Litigation concerns have upped the ante when it comes to record retention ? having a solid policy for retaining and destroying records and being able to accurately retrieve them if required, is important.? And that?s just one example.

Yet too many businesses either don?t have a good document management solution and as a result experience uncertainty due to poorly organized records ? or they are outsourcing because of a faulty perception it?s a big headache to deal with records in-house.

And that?s regrettable. Why?? Because managing records through an in-house solution is doable and has advantages ? it?s not hard, it can save money, it?s convenient, it?s more secure, and it gets you organized.

Managing records in-house is well within the capability of small and medium sized businesses.

Fellowes, a company recognized for its commitment to innovation in the workplace, recently surveyed decision-makers at small and medium sized businesses with 1 ? 1,000 employees.? That survey shows the advantages of managing records in-house, as follows:

1)???? Save money ? 52% of those who use an in-house document management system say it has saved them money / cut expenses.? Not only that, 16% of those say an in-house document management system has had a ?strongly positive impact? on operational expenses.

In fact, cost is a key driver for switching to an in-house solution.? Almost 65% of those switching to an in-house document management solution say that costs of off-site document storage, shredding, binding and laminating were a factor in their decision.

To get a quick snapshot of your company?s potential savings, try the Fellowes Savings Analyzer at savingsanalyzer.fellowes.com.

2)???? No more unexpected and hidden costs? One of the issues faced by businesses using off-site document storage and retrieval are unexpected? fees than can drive up the overall cost of off-site records management.? On top of basic storage and retrieval fees, there are extra charges for fuel surcharges, odd-size boxes, re-boxing, rush retrieval, rush delivery, third party delivery, storage minimums, handling charges, program fees, archival destruction/shredding, detailed billing, and photocopying charges. An in-house solution can minimize or eliminate all of these costs. This chart shows the negative impact of so many fees:

3)???? Retrieval times are faster ? Time is money in business.? Only 14% said that their off-site document management vendor retrieved documents the same day as requested.? Almost a third say it takes three days or more to retrieve records ? sometimes more than a week! ?With an in-house solution, speed is within your control.

4)???? Efficiency and convenience improve ? According to the survey, 74% say that going to off-site document management has had no impact or a negative impact on efficiency.

Fellowes created the Savings Analyzer to calculate your savings potential.? It takes as little as 60 seconds to run the calculator ? try it and see.

Gene that's usually bad news loses its punch if you live to your 90s

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? A gene linked to the risk of developing Alzheimer's, heart disease and diabetes becomes less important to quality of life once people hit their 90s, a Mayo Clinic study shows. At that point, good friends and a positive attitude have a bigger impact, the researchers say.

The findings are published this month in the Journal of American Medical Directors Association.

Researchers used the National Institutes of Health-supported Rochester Epidemiology Project, a database of patient records in Olmsted County, Minn., to find people ages 90 to 99 living on their own or in long-term care. The 121 participants completed an interview, a physical exam and a quality-of-life questionnaire. Participants were divided into groups based on their cognitive function, to sort out the effects of age and disease on well-being, and blood samples were taken for genotyping.

Researchers discovered that those who carried the gene in question, known as ApoE4, were no worse off than others in the study.

"We found if people had good physical, intellectual, and emotional well-being, more social connectedness, and if they perceived themselves to have better coping skills, they felt they had better quality of life," says co-author Maria Lapid, M.D., a Mayo Clinic psychiatrist.

"The study shows that the ApoE4 genotype doesn't determine what your quality of life will be, and that, regardless of your gender, environmental factors play a significant role in your physical, emotional, spiritual, and social well-being," she says. "You can have good quality of life regardless of this gene."

The median age of those studied was 93; 87 percent were women. Those reporting poorer quality of life tended to be men, for reasons that are unclear, and people who experienced pain.

The Alzheimer's Association, National Institute on Aging, and Robert H. and Clarice Smith and Abigail Van Buren Alzheimer's Disease Research Program of the Mayo Foundation funded the study.

Female Trouble: For Komodo Dragons, Rife Inequalities between the Sexes [Slide Show]

New research reveals female Komodo dragons live half as long as males, most likely due to their extreme maternal duties, such as fighting off cannibalistic males?a scenario that, when coupled with anthropogenic threats, has implications for the species's survival

In Indonesia's Komodo National Park the world's largest lizard takes down prey with bacteria-laden toxic saliva and jaws that can snap a person's leg in half. Yet for all their ferocity, Komodo dragons (Varanus komodoensis) face hardships of their own. Especially the females: new research shows that the struggle to usher in the next generation of dragons most likely costs these monitor lizard mothers years of their lives.

"We were surprised to find the sex-specific differences, especially in longevity, between males and females," says Tim Jessop, a zoologist at the University of Melbourne in Australia and one of the co-authors of the PLoS One paper. "There's no way we could have worked that out without doing a long-term field study."

Although Komodo dragons are well-known icons of nature's extreme side and are protected under the International Union for Conservation of Nature, conservationists do not know much about the species's growth rate, population differences or life span. To begin teasing out some of these factors, Jessop and a team of international researchers followed 400 Komodo dragons found in 10 populations around the national park's islands. For eight years the researchers collected data about the animals' growth and survival using a capture?mark?recapture method. After collecting those data, they used statistical models to examine how the dragons varied depending on age and sex, taking into account island location, prey availability and lizard population density.

? View a slide show of Indonesia's Komodo dragons

Their results revealed gross disparities between the sexes, with females living, on average, 32 years, compared with 60 for the males. Moreover, the former grew to around 1.2 meters long and weighed about 22 kilograms whereas the latter measured in at more than 1.5 meters and nearly 70 kilograms.

Although Jessop and his colleagues cannot prove a cause-and-effect relationship without performing manipulations in the field, they suspect that reproduction accounts for the differences between the genders because all other factors appear equal in the animals' ecology. Females breed as often as once a year, a process that costs them threefold: They spend energy producing eggs, manually digging nests in which they lay their eggs and, most important, guarding the nest for up to five months against hungry males or other predators. During the nest-guarding stage, the females reduce feeding or fast altogether, and emerge from the ordeal in poor physical condition, meaning they are more susceptible to diseases or attacks by cannibalistic conspecifics.

Males, on the other hand, must compete for the few reproductively available females. This competitive pressure further exacerbates the sex-based skew, the researchers think, selectively pushing males toward progressively larger body sizes to give them the advantage for winning mates.

"It sounds horrible that these differences exist, but it's a strategy that works for the species," Jessop says. "On the evolutionary side of things, Komodo dragons have been using this strategy for countless millennia on these small islands, so obviously it works, or else they would be extinct."

But like any animal confined to a small territory and unable to mingle with outside populations, he points out, Komodo dragons remain particularly vulnerable to environmental flux. Climate change that increases rainfall, for example, threatens to inundate some of the lizards' island habitat, which may shift vegetation away from the current savanna grasslands that support the dragons' prey: predominantly water buffalo and deer. In addition to habitat degradation, however, the more immediate threats include humans poaching prey species and, occasionally, the dragons themselves.

The Right Tools for the Job | Home Improvement Ideas

A business owner should be poised to create a powerful first impression, and this begins well before the customers step inside the headquarters. Understanding the importance of having the lawn mowed during the summer and snow removed from the premises during winter is not enough. What people need is a heavy duty commercial equipment Kentucky that can turn such a job into a breeze while delivering results that meet and exceed the contractor?s expectations.

The acquisition price of the commercial equipment Kentucky is significant but should not be the only factor in making the decision. As long as the product is manufactured by a company with a reputation for quality, such as Toro, Husqvarna or Wacker Neuson they will pay for themselves on the long run. To make things even better, some retailers offer 0% interest for the first two years and will offer maintenance at reasonable prices throughout Bowling Green city.

Another option for keeping the acquisition?s prices low is to purchase used equipment, as long as it is made by one of the aforesaid producers, and it was well maintained. One can buy the best commercial equipment Kentucky has to offer for only a fraction of its shelf price, without trading quality for lower rates. Last but not least, those who need lawn mowers, snowblowers, utility vehicles, air compressors and pretty much any other type of highly specialized gear for a single job, can choose to rent the equipment instead of buying it.

Where to Look for Tax Forclosure Homes for Sale ? Real Estate ...

law_scale_background.jpg

Tax forclosure homes for sale are all over the country today. It is up to you, the buyer, to take advantage of them. Tax foreclosures occur when property owners become unable to pay the taxes of their properties. When this happens, the government tax agency repossesses the property with the intention of selling it. Since maintaining the property will only cost the agency money, the agency will try to sell the property as soon as possible, even at a lower price. This explains why properties under Jefferson City Foreclosures list are priced lower than market value.

If you are looking for tax forclosure homes for sale, then the internet should be one of your first destinations. There are now many websites that allow you to access foreclosure listings in various states. Some websites offer a free service while some require a small fee. To make sure that you use the best service possible, most websites will offer you a free trial before you agree to subscribe to the service.

When choosing a service, you also need to ensure that the site constantly updates its Jefferson City foreclosures list and other foreclosure listings. In fact, this is one of the most important things that you need to ensure when choosing a foreclosure listing service. You don?t want to have your heart set on a particular property only to find out that it has already been sold a couple of weeks ago.

Once you have browsed the tax forclosure homes for sale and you have decided to buy a property, you might want to consider hiring a real estate agent to help you with your purchase. Just make sure that the realtor is not working on behalf of the seller.

Now, try us on E-ForeclosureSearch.com. We assure to you an excellent service as well as up-to-date listings of foreclosures for sale.

Spectrum sharing opens a potential attack route ? Tech News and ...

One aspect of spectrum sharing that?s receiving less attention than it should is security ? specifically, potential problems brought on by the very attributes that makes this technology work.

There?s a basic concept in computer network security: If you don?t want A to attack B, make it impossible for A and B to communicate. That?s why sensitive military communications systems do not have links to the internet. Experts realize that, even with the best firewalls and filtering, if a connection exists, the system is inherently less secure.

That?s exactly the security problem that arises with spectrum sharing: It creates connections that could be compromised.

In current dedicated (non-sharing) spectrum-allocation approaches, devices operating in spectrum band ?A? cannot interfere with systems using band ?B.? Sure, sometimes there?s a little interference due to poor radio design ? for example, the proposed LightSquared network and existing GPS devices ? but the attack path does not exist. Even if a smartphone were infected with the worst virus imaginable, the malware could not interrupt communications provided over different spectrum bands.

Sharing spectrum could mean sharing viruses too.

That could change with spectrum sharing, where devices labeled as ?secondary users? share spectrum belonging to ?primary users.? Sharing happens either in specific geographic locations where the primary is not operating on the spectrum in question, or during specific periods of time when the primary system is not using the spectrum.

In what is called ?dynamic spectrum access,? the primary system posts to a database the availability of its spectrum. Then, the secondary user queries the database to learn when and where it can use that available spectrum. Alternatively, the secondary system may use cognitive radios to sense the spectrum environment and determine whether the secondary system can use the spectrum without interfering with the primary user. Combining databases and cognitive radios is another possible approach to enable spectrum sharing.

One area of particular concern, however, is that, in many cases, primary users will be sensitive government systems, especially if up to 1 GHz of spectrum is set aside for sharing, as proposed by the President?s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST.) What happens if the secondary user device doesn?t follow the rules and transmits at times or in locations it?s not supposed to? Worse yet, what if hundreds of thousands of devices are systematically compromised and start misbehaving in unison to launch a coordinated denial-of-service attack on the government communications systems?

It?s hard to know for sure the possible ramifications of such a barrage, because our industry currently has little information about the primary government systems with which commercial operations would share spectrum; much of that data is classified. But the effects can?t be good.

The whole point of spectrum sharing is for secondary users not to use the spectrum when the primary system needs it. Doing so could result in denial-of-service for the primary government system, with potential consequences that include lower reliability, operation over reduced distances, or even complete failure.

The airwaves aren?t the only problem.

Samsung Galaxy S II

Could this device harbor malware that might hop the airwaves?

Compounding my concern is how complex user devices are becoming. In the same way that personal computers became more vulnerable to malware as they grew increasingly sophisticated, so are smartphones now becoming targets. The number of ways in which malware can infect mobile devices will only increase, and if that malware is designed to disrupt the proper operation of the smartphone radio, then a spectrum attack on government communications systems via a shared-spectrum scenario is a real possibility.

That?s true even though the spectrum-sharing logic may, theoretically, be isolated from the application-execution space in the smartphone. As long as both are present and some form of connection exists, the consumer?s mobile device could become an attack path in spectrum sharing situations.

It gets worse.

So far we?ve only considered user devices being compromised. But what if an attacker infiltrated the database itself in a dynamic-spectrum access system? It?s that database that determines how secondary systems access the band, and if the database is manipulated into giving out incorrect information, the secondary system could massively disrupt the primary system. And this could occur on a network-wide basis.

Don?t panic, just pause.

We can share. Security just needs to be thought out first.

It?s not that appropriate safeguards can?t be implemented. Most security problems can be solved, given sufficient time and effort. A more difficult and pertinent question is whether protective measures can be designed beforehand and sufficiently well to satisfy security officers responsible for extremely sensitive primary government systems. In my view, hardening spectrum-sharing systems to protect against malicious attack will inevitably add to the already considerable complexity of such systems.

As I?ve stated previously, spectrum sharing can theoretically be made to work. Sharing scenarios can also be made secure. However, ensuring that a networking system is secure is a time-consuming process, regardless of the type of network.

It is impossible to predict just how much overhead thinking through security issues will add to developing spectrum-sharing solutions. Rather, security has to be added as yet one more consideration, along with all the other concerns raised by spectrum sharing. These include identifying what types of systems will be shared and how, determining the market for shared systems, and developing specifications and standards to allow sharing.

Beyond very basic-use cases, spectrum sharing is going to be a complicated proposition. Ensuring that sharing is secure and does not endanger existing government systems only adds to the complexity. Therefore, I don?t see sharing as a short-term solution to our spectrum woes.

After reading this cover letter, I lost mental weight. | Jobs and ...

?

How to do your cover letter wrong.

You call this a cover letter?

?

?

You?ve probably read tons of articles teaching you how to craft a great cover letter, ?I guess Mark, a New York University undergraduate did the same while he prepared his application for a summer position with the prestigious JP Morgan. But he unfortunately came up with a 400-word joke for a cover letter. This was what he wrote.

Dear Sir or Madame:

I am an ambitious undergraduate at NYU triple majoring in Mathematics, Economics, and Computer Science. I am a punctual, personable, and shrewd individual, yet I have a quality which I pride myself on more than any of these.

I am unequivocally the most unflaggingly hard worker I know, and I love self-improvement. I have always felt that my time should be spent wisely, so I continuously challenge myself; I left Villanova because the work was too easy. Once I realized I could achieve a perfect GPA while holding a part-time job at NYU, I decided to redouble my effort by placing out of two classes, taking two honors classes, and holding two part-time jobs. That semester I achieved a 3.93, and in the same time I managed to bench double my bodyweight and do 35 pull-ups.

I say these things only because solid evidence is more convincing than unverifiable statements, and I want to demonstrate that I am a hard worker. J.P. Morgan is a firm with a reputation that precedes itself and employees who represent only the best and rightest in finance. I know that the employees in this firm will push me to excellence, especially within the Investment Banking division. In fact, one of the supporting reasons I chose Investment Banking over any other division was that I know it is difficult. I hope to augment my character by diligently working for the professionals at Morgan Stanley, and I feel I have much to offer in return.

I am proficient in several programming languages, and I can pick up a new one very quickly. For instance, I learned a years worth of Java from NYU in 27 days on my own; this is how I placed out of two including: Money and Banking, Analysis, Game Theory, Probability and Statistics. Even further, I am taking Machine Learning and Probabilistic Graphical Modeling currently, two programming courses offered by Stanford, so that I may truly offer the most if I am accepted. I am proficient with Bloomberg terminals, excellent with excel, and can perform basic office functions with terrifying efficiency. I have plenty of experience in the professional world through my internship at Merrill Lynch, and my research assistant position at NYU. In fact, my most recent employer has found me so useful that he promoted me to a Research Assistant and an official CTED intern. This role is usually reserved for Masters students, but my employer gave the title to me so that he could give me more work.

Please realize that I am not a braggart or conceited, I just want to outline my usefulness. Egos can be a huge liability, and I try not to have one.

Thank you so much for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Best,

Mark

Did you read it till the end? I didn?t, not at first. Many recruiters will do same to a cover letter that looks anything close to what Mark wrote. Here?s what any recruiter expects you to know.

- A Cover Letter is Not all about You: Mark really had fun writing this cover letter, he probably thought it was an essay about his life. I know Mark loves to do pull ups and probably loves hard work but I?m yet to wrap my mind around what he had to offer JP Morgan. It may not be totally wrong to ostentatiously talk about your accomplishments in an informal event, but if you are applying for a job then reduce the self- glorification to its barest. There are better ways to prove you are the candidate potential employers look out for.

?

-??Know the Company You intend to Work ?with: JP Morgan and Morgan Stanley are two different companies, and Mark obviously missed it somewhere. I agree we are all prone to making mistakes but the very obvious ones like mixing up company names are big NOs . Mark?s slip-up showed how careless he was with his research. We are no longer in a world where information is restricted to a select few, you can gather facts and opinions on almost anything imaginable. ?A thorough research about the company or organisation you are applying for is very crucial because it lets you capture the needs of potential employers and show them you are deeply interested in the organisation. If you can?t avoid misspelling your potential employer?s name or making any spelling or grammatical error in 300 words, how would you handle more rigorous responsibilities? Take the time to dig out the right information.

?

-?Simplicity Goes a Long Way: A cover letter basically serves the purpose to get recruiters interested (or curious) enough to look at your r?sum? and writing an epistle only kills that charm. It is very understandable Mark wanted to present himself to his potential employers in the best light possible and had to look out for buzzwords and catchphrases to capture their interest but, terrifying efficiency?? Now I?m scared.

?

-?Whatever You Do, Do not think of an Elephant: You thought of an Elephant, didn?t you? It?s a psychological fact that every word has a frame and when you negate a frame, you evoke the frame.

Please realize that I am not a braggart or conceited, I just want to outline my usefulness.??

By making that conclusion in his cover letter, Mark placed himself in a very bad light. He probably removed the scales off recruiters? eyes, making them realize how much of a braggart he is. A cover letter should, at all times, emphasize your qualifications and value to prospective employers; more importantly, it should portray the right personality.

?

I won?t fail to mention, proofread your work as many times as possible. Get someone to do the same for you. Let every paragraph, sentence or phrase be a punch line, save recruiters any mental stress by conveying the right message appropriately. Define the problem employers are trying to solve and in one easy read, prove you can deliver solutions. ?

?

What other things did you notice about Mark?s cover letter? Kindly share your thoughts in the section below.

Canada beats undermanned Cuba in qualifying

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:17 p.m. ET Oct. 12, 2012

TORONTO (AP) -Despite squandering numerous chances, Canada beat undermanned Cuba 3-0 Friday night to remain on course in World Cup qualifying.

The Cubans (0-5-0) dressed just 11 players for the game. Down the field, Canada (3-1-1) had 10 substitutes dressed.

And Cuba was down to 10 in the 70th minute after striker Roberto Linares was ejected off a challenge that crumpled captain Kevin McKenna.

Three minutes later, Canadian striker Olivier Occean was sent off for a melee after Will Johnson's header made it 2-0. That means Occean will have to miss Canada's final match against Honduras, which will decide whether the Canadians advance to the CONCACAF finals.

Tosaint Ricketts scored for Canada in the 14th minute. And until Johnson's goal padded the lead with just 20 minutes remaining, the Cubans were one kick away from evening the score and silencing the enthusiastic crowd of 17,712 at BMO Field.

David Edgar made it 3-0 in the 78th minute with a sweet volley - a score that could come in useful with goal difference a tiebreaker.

Now a showdown awaits against Honduras in San Pedro Sula on Tuesday.

The top two in the group that also includes Panama advance to the final six-team round of qualifying.

From there, three will advance to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. A fourth CONCACAF team will take part in an intercontinental playoff with the Oceania winner to see who joins them.

Brane Space: How Do We Educate GOOPr Morons?

Well, wouldn't you know it wouldn't take long for assorted fundagelical know-nothings to try to defend the moron Paul Broun, a current member of the House Science and Technology Committee who actually has rejected 90% of modern science. (See, e.g. http://brane-space.blogspot.com/2012/10/congressman-moron-broun-science-is-from.html) To remind readers, Broun insisted that the Big Bang Theory, Embryology and Evolution are all "lies from the pit of Hell".

Now, let me make it abundantly clear here, especially for the occasional fundy readers who have difficulty parsing complex notions, and even the principle of basic free speech - that I've nothing against Broun saying whatever he wants to his congregation, and that he's entitled to whatever whacko beliefs he has in the context of that congregation. But he's not entitled to use his office as a member of a congressional Science-Technology Committee to mouth bullshit and half-cracked, stupid theories of "creation".

Anyway, let's deal with Mr. "Straight Talk" Fundy and some of his comments. He bloviates:

"Evolution is an enabler of atheism. Evolutionary scientists likely would not admit that their goal is to give an alternate explanation of the origins of life, and thereby to give a foundation for atheism, but according to the Bible, that is exactly why the theory of evolution exists."

Well, I hate to disabuse this poor,? uninformed cuss but the theory of evolution is an "enabler" of nothing. It stands on its own scientific merits as I noted numerous times before and even showed the predictions which it confirms, including the presence of essentially the same cytochrome-c sequence in chimps and humans, the combination of the 2p and 2q chromosomes in apes to the '2' chromosome in humans, and the evolution of the foraminfera - for which we have a FULL evolutionary record.

Sadly, this guy's deficiency of education is also apparent in confusing evolution - the theory for the DEVELOPMENT of life via natural selection, with Abiogenesis - the theory of the?ORIGIN of life. I mean - if a would-be critic isn't even able to tell evolution from Abiogenesis, what the hell use is his critique? It's just plain old garbage - useful only to flush down a toilet. Either you learn the differences between the scientific areas you're critiquing, or you shut up.

So, given he doesn't know dogshit about evolution, let's move on to the big Bang, where he babbles:

"So, what about this "Big Bang" crapola? Well, in view of the incredible order in the universe, it is difficult to draw any conclusion other than existence of a supernatural, superintelligent Being behind it all."

Hardly! THAT is an assumption which has to be proven. Meantime, his appeal to this "incredible order" in the universe again breaks down because his monumental ignorance. He refers to an "order" which apparently manifests in about 0.001% of the cosmos but ignores the other 99.999% where NO order is evident, and indeed, for which something like 73% is dark energy and another 20% dark matter! (The rest being hot, ionized plasma).

Of course, if one has his or her head only in bibles there's no doubt there'll be no familiarity with the basic implements and instruments of modern cosmology. If this character had even the limited ability to read outside his one book, he'd learn about the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe and other devices which have disclosed the dark energy in the cosmos.

One's only conclusion is that if some "supernatural' entity created the cosmos, he or It must've been BLIND! To have created so much DARKNESS, in dark energy and dark matter!

WTF good is a blind creator?

The blogger, having failed in his arguments has no choice but to use red herrings, i.e.

"As one scientist said, "You can lead a skeptical astronomer to order but you cannot make him think." Even the agnostic, Immanuel Kant , wrote: "Two things fill the mind with ever new and increasing admiration and awe, the oftener and more steadily we reflect on them: the starry heavens above and the moral law within me."

Well, first NO scientist I am aware of would make the statement the fundy uses above. The reason is that skepticism is a healthy part of science. In fact, no one can truly claim to have a scientific temperament if he doesn't also have a skeptical mind. He must question all claims, and also the evidence, if it doesn't pass muster.? The fundies' favorite book fails this test because it can't pass the most basic science test!

Consider the initial major error in Genesis,(Gen.:1: 1-5)

?In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day?

It?is clear that the ?light? referred to in the last three sentences is none other than the SUN. However, it is clear from reading each line through that the Earth was supposedly made BEFORE the Sun. (E.g. Earth without form, darkness upon face of the deep).

However, this is physically impossible! We know from modern astrophysics that the solar proto-nebula had to collapse first to yield the SUN. (No planets, since they had yet to spin off the collapsing nebular cloud ? it hadn?t cooled enough to allow it). As the proto-solar nebula collapsed it also began spinning and gained angular momentum. This angular momentum was then transferred to regions of the nebula that cooled and separated from the whole, and these regions became separate clouds of dust and gas that aggregated into the planets.

Under a combination of electrostatic attraction (between larger charged particles) and gravity (attracting the whole mass from the center of the cloud) each planet was formed as what we call a ?planetesimal?. As more angular momentum was transferred ? the planetesimal?s (each one) acquired their own spin (in a period of revolution) and specific shapes. The giant planets (e.g. Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, Uranus) garnered more spin momentum than the more dense, terrestrial planets. Thus Jupiter?s planetesimal ended up as an oblate spheroid with diameter of about 88,000 mile and rotating rapidly with a day of ~ 10 hours. Earth meanwhile ended up as a relatively spherical orb with diameter of ~ 8,000 miles and day approaching approach 24 hrs. Mars ended up in a similar shape to that of Earth and a diameter of 4200 miles and day ~ 24 hours.

Thus, the Earth spun off about 1.1 billion years after the solar nebula fully collapsed, and it could not have come BEFORE the Sun. Indeed, the absence of the central mass of the Sun, or ~ 10 ^33 kilograms, would have meant the Earth- if made with no Sun present- would instantly have been hurled into a direction toward the constellation Hercules at 12 miles per second with no central mass to keep it in check.

? Hamstrung he then babbles more balderdash:

?"Modern astronomers are again faced with the evidence of God for a Creator of the cosmos .??

Alas, given the proportions of dark energy and dark matter we are faced with NO such evidence. One must wonder what ale or spiked pale beer or moonshine this guy is drinking to entertain such fantasies.??

And to top it off we behold this nonsense:

?"Ironically, the Big Bang theory does not explain the "bang." It takes current conditions and attempts to count backward in time. It assumes that all natural laws have remained the same since the beginning of the universe, but even then it cannot explain how energy could reside in a singularity or what made it explode.??

First, the term "Big Bang" does not refer to a "bang" in any literal sense. There could have been no "bang" because there was no space for it to have exploded into. Hence, it is not an explosion but an expansion. In its inception, from negative vacuum energy, then space-time was actually created too. ? Second, the reference to "current conditions" only applies strictly to THERMODYNAMICS or a thermodynamic basis. (As shown in the Appendix of Steven Weinberg's 'First Three Minutes'. Thus Weinberg uses the fact that the radius of the universe is inversely proportional to the temperature, T, and hence the mass density rho(tO is inversely proportional to R(t))).

Thus, we can - from thermodynamics- arrive at the original temperature (or fairly close to the instant of inception) by taking the current 2.7 K microwave background and extrapolating back using black body radiation principles and basic statistical mechanics.??

Third, obviously it can't have assumed all natural laws "remained the same since the beginning of the universe" because the temperatures back then would not have allowed it! In the earliest instants we had temperatures of over a trillion degrees K so how could any natural laws exist such as recognized today? The ambient temperatures wouldn't even have been cool enough to permit the formation of extended matter or mass systems, or even ATOMS! Thus, Newton's law of universal gravitation wouldn't even have applied! Of course, none of Newton's law of motion would have either!

?His last complaint discloses further entrenched ignorance. Again, the Big Bang was not an "explosion" but an expansion which also initiated space-time. The energy resident in the initial singularity has to be treated in two parts, one applicable to conformal space-time and the other non-conformal. Interested readers might want to get hold of the excellent paper: 'Universe Before Planck Time - A Quantum Gravity Model' in Physical Review D, Vol. 28, p. 756 where T. Padmanabhan shows how the universe could be incepted from an initial quantum fluctuation.

?This is possible when the conformal part of space-time is treated as a quantum variable. ? Padmanabhan does this beautifully, by using a quantum harmonic oscillator model and using integral related to the action (J) as a function of time. He then solves for the 'expansion factor' S(t) using two separate energy equations from which he's able to track the energy associated with the singularity.??

For those who might not be able to get hold of his paper, my 2009 blog on vacuum energy and fluctuations is still available: http://brane-space.blogspot.com/2009/09/another-case-of-misapplied-causality-to.html??

What we can see from this is that fundy bloggers who know nothing about quantum mechanics, cosmology or evolution need to keep their comments to their good books and not try to comment on things beyond their ken, for which they have not one scintilla of background. ? Hey, that's good advice for Paul Broun too!
