SolarWorld, Fortune executives tout Hillsboro's get it done philosophy

SolarWorld USA president Gordon Brinser and Fortune Data Centers CFO Bruce MacLean expressed wonder and appreciation for Hillsboro?s business-friendly climate at a chamber of commerce business forum on Tuesday.?

The two executives cited the city?s preference of saying ?yes? rather than ?no? to business challenges as a huge difference from other cities. ?They try hard to find a reason to say yes to you,? Brinser said.?

Brinser, a Sandy native and MacLean spoke as part of the chamber?s monthly business forum at the Glenn and Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center.?

Fortune is a wholesale data center merchant, meaning they lease space and a sophisticated network of power and security to tenants to set up data servers. The company purchased a building in Hillsboro May 2011. SolarWorld, the German based solar panel manufacturer, cut the ribbon on its U.S. headquarters in Oregon in 2008.

The two leaders toil in different trades, but they shared a common experience of welcoming, bend-over-backwards style governance from city officials. They swapped horror stories of other municipalities. MacLean, whose company is based in San Jose, said Hillsboro accomplishes ?in less than 48 hours? what would take 6 months in California.?

Brinser said the city is always there to help, such as when a police bicyclist escorted solar panels on short notice.?

The two businesses also share a common building predecessor ? both are housed in remodeled semiconductor fab sites.?

Brinser said his company benefits from the city?s ?pro-active, solutions-created? philosophy. The solar panel manufacturer has 900 employees in Hillsboro, Brinser said, and is firmly entrenched in the community. ?

SolarWorld owns 100 acres of land on the Northwest Evergreen Parkway location but only occupies half of it. Brinser said he is eagerly awaiting the day he can announce the company plans to expand its manufacturing in Hillsboro. ?That day will come,? he said.?

He lauded the city?s ?visionary leaders? and the enterprise zone property tax exemption as huge factors in what makes Hillsboro business friendly.

MacLean said the lack of a sales tax is a huge factor and eliminates risk for his customers. He also noted Intel?s presence has created a vast, high-tech and reliable electricity infrastructure. ?It is probably the most reliable anywhere in the U.S. and maybe the world,? MacLean said.

?

Brinser said a final decision is expected on Wednesday from the U.S. Department of Commerce regarding a tariff dispute with Chinese solar panel manufacturers, which Brinser alleged are selling products far below?manufacturing?costs and crippling U.S. companies.

The next business forum is Nov. 13 and will feature Metro Council President Tom Hughes and recently elected councilor Bob Stacey.?

The forum is at the Glenn and Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center, 527 E. Main Street, Hillsboro, 503-648-1102 ?
