Corporate Philanthropy: Apple ?Miss A? | Charity Meets Style.?

What?s the first thing you did this morning? I?ll bet you did something like open your eyes, stretch and shut off the alarm coming from your iPhone and haven?t set it down since. You?ve plugged in an iPod or used an iPad or downloaded something new onto iTunes and even if you haven?t, you have certainly heard about and seen?Apple products everywhere. Steve Jobs left behind a legacy when he died, and this legacy wasn?t without charity.

Apple is one of the most profitable companies in the entire world, but for the most part, they keep a lid on their charitable giving. However, Bono recently praised Apple for being one of the largest donors to the?(RED) campaign, which works alongside The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, whose goal it is to rid Africa and the world of the dreaded disease and since it?s inception in 2002, the Global Fund has treated 4.2 million people. Apple reportedly donated $500 million to the (RED) campaign and all of their products sold in conjunction with (RED) also earned the charity some of the profits.

In a recent meeting with the current CEO of Apple, Tim Cook, it was revealed to employees even more how much Apple had given back to the world. The new CEO told his employees that the company had given over $50 million dollars to Stanford University hospitals, with half of the sum going towards the children?s hospital and the other given to the main hospital. In another effort to turn around the company?s image for being tightfisted with money, Cook also announced that along with displaying more transparently the inter-workings of the company, he will also match employee charitable giving up to $10,000! That means that potentially millions could be flooded back into charities that employees choose.

As Steve Jobs once said, ?The people who are crazy enough to change the world are the ones who do.? With that in mind,?the next time you create a presentation on your iPad or get a text from your sweetheart on your iPhone or download your new, new favorite song from iTunes, you can be happier about it. You are using a product created by a man who refused to give up the fight against AIDS and you are supporting the new CEO and the entire Apple company in their efforts to give as much back as they can. Be crazy enough to change the world.
