NCAA soccer | U.Va., VCU bumped in 2nd round

New Mexico 3, Virginia 1

Kyle Venter's header five minutes into the match gave the Lobos a 1-0 lead Sunday and sent them on their way to a second-round defeat of the six-time NCAA champion Cavaliers in Albuquerque, N.M.

U.Va. (10-7-4) tied it early in the second half on Matt Brown's header. But New Mexico (17-3-1) regained the lead 10 minutes later and iced it on a goal with 19 seconds to play.

? The U.Va. women lost 3-1 to Duke in the Round of 16 in Charlottesville.

Syracuse 3, Virginia Commonwealth 2

Louis Clark's goal with just over two minutes left in overtime eliminated the Rams in Richmond.

VCU (12-4-5) took a 1-0 lead nine minutes in on Monge Solano's free kick from 40 yards. The Rams added a goal five minutes later on Dennis Castillo's penalty kick following a Syracuse handball.

Clark's goal in the 21st minute cut the margin to 2-1 and Syracuse (14-6-0) tied it in the 30th minute on Stefanos Stamoulactos' shot off Clark's assist.
