Paul Turnbull named president of Mid-Pacific Institute

Paul Turnbull has been named president of Mid-Pacific Institute in Honolulu.

Paul Turnbull, superintendant of Santa Ynez Valley Union High School District near Santa Barbara, Calif., has been named president of Mid-Pacific Institute in Honolulu, one of Hawaii?s largest private schools.

Turnbull will succeed Joe Rice, who is retiring in July after 17 years at the Manoa private school, which grew from a grades 7-12 boarding school to a K-12 college preparatory school during his tenure.

Turnbull was chosen by a 13-member search committee, which conducted a worldwide search for a new president with assistance from the Princeton, N.J.-based consulting firm Wickenden & Associates.

?Coming to our Manoa campus from being the superintendent of the competitive Santa Ynez Valley Union High School District in California, Dr. Turnbull has the breadth and depth of experience to lead the school forward, building upon its traditional strengths,? Kenneth Kupchak, chairman of the school?s Board of Trustees, said in a statement.

Turnbull earned a doctor of philosophy from the University of California Santa Barbara, and holds a master?s degree in education from the University of Victoria in Canada.

?Mid-Pacific is steeped in a tradition of renewal and growth, and I am looking forward to working closely with the entire Mid-Pacific community to build upon that tradition,? Turnbull said in a statement. ?I also believe that Mid-Pacific is poised to take the next step as a leader among schools in the state and in the nation because of its visionary instruction and student-centered focus at every grade level.?

Mid-Pacific Institute is the fourth-largest private school in Hawaii, with an enrollment of 1,550 students during the current school year, according to PBN research.
