• Even if we do not have access to Wi-Fi or 3G, we can use the application that is installed in our mobile device.
• An application can use the entire screen of the device and provide a better interface to the user.
• The application is always visible on the desktop of the device, so the chances of using it are greater.

Disadvantages

The various disadvantages are -

• For a user to use an application, he or she must first download it, requiring greater knowledge and brand loyalty.
• It requires more money and resources to develop an application.
• Applications are not available to be downloaded on all mobile devices.
• Updating an application is not as easy as updating a website.

Thus, we can see that mobile websites and mobile applications can both be beneficial to a business and its customers.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? An attorney for concert giant AEG Live says the company could not have known while promoting comeback concerts that Michael Jackson was using an anesthetic that killed him.

Lawyer Marvin S. Putnam addressed jurors on Monday in opening statements of the wrongful death lawsuit filed by Jackson's mother against AEG.

He says the company didn't have access to information shared between Jackson and his doctors.

Putnam's remarks came after Katherine Jackson's attorney played a song Jackson recorded for his children and detailed the singer's struggles with addiction throughout his life.

Her lawsuit accuses AEG of failing to properly investigate the doctor who cared for Jackson and was later convicted of causing Jackson's death with a fatal dose of the anesthetic propofol.

Putnam called Jackson an addict and said the company shouldn't be held responsible for his death.

Where they missed:? Thomas, an undersized safety whose best attribute is his ability to deliver big hits, suffered multiple concussions last season.? It?s too much of a risk to take with a fourth-round draft pick.? Ditto for Jones; if the Steelers are looking for a backup, they could have waited until a later round than four.? The decision not to take a tight end could be a problem, if Heath Miller suffers a setback while recovering from a torn ACL.

Impact rookies:? Jones and Bell likely will instantly be added to the starting lineup.? Barring injury, each could become a candidate for rookie of the year on their respective sides of the ball.

Long-term prospects:? A solid draft class with a couple of guys who could become contributors and leaders in the near future.? And if the Steelers are still as good at scouting receivers as they were when finding Wallace, Sanders, and Brown, Thomas and Justin Brown could become difference makers, too.

Reconstructions: What ancient mummies have to tell us about the perils of modern life

Once you hit a certain age, visiting a doctor is basically a guilt trip. All that satisfying stuff you eat, drink or smoke is killing you, a white-coated overachiever tells you. You need to exercise and lose weight, or the grim reaper will be at your door long before you?re ready. And it will all be your fault.

There?s truth in that message. The primary causes of death in Western society today are cardio?vascular disease and cancer, two diseases that are very much tied up with what we put in our bodies and how we use and abuse them. If you eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly and abstain from smoking and excessive drink, your odds of living to a ripe old age do in fact increase.

But how much? Are cancer and cardiovascular disease primarily caused by the excesses of life in a modern industrial society? Or are they the inevitable end of a long and otherwise healthy life? At some level, heart disease and cancer must kill so many of us simply because in the past, plagues and saber-toothed cats beat them to it.

CT scans of ancient mummies from Egypt, Peru, Alaska and the U.S. Southwest suggest that clogged arteries have always been a fact of life, even for people who defined fast food as a swift-running ungulate. Researchers recently examined 137 mummies for evidence of calcified plaques associated with major arteries, and found that 34 percent of them probably had some atherosclerosis when they died.

Using skeletal features to estimate how old these mummies were at death, researchers showed that atherosclerosis risk increased with age. About 15 percent of those who died before age 30 had sclerotic deposits, an April 6 paper in Lancet reported, but the rate among those who died in their 40s was more than 50 percent.

The paper?s authors, an international team of pathologists and archaeologists, looked at diet and lifestyle factors that might have encouraged atherosclerosis. But there were no epidemiological smoking guns. The Egyptians ate something very close to the ?Mediterranean diet? that a recent Spanish study showed greatly benefits cardiovascular health. The Unangans of coastal Alaska ate a diet high in fish oil, which has been shown to lower cholesterol and potentially reduce cardiovascular risk. In Peru and the U.S. Southwest, people hunted, farmed and gathered a richly varied diet devoid of dairy, processed sugar and lots of other stuff that tastes really good.

The one risk factor all of these ancient people probably did face was inflammation. In the last decade or so, it has become apparent that the processes our bodies use to fight off infection and heal injury also do a lot of damage. Chronic inflammation ? even something as apparently trivial as gum disease ? has been shown to boost a person?s risk of heart attack.

In a world without antibiotics, flush toilets and Purell, the immune systems of the ancients would have been in a constant state of agitation. Other mummy studies have shown, for example, that tuberculosis was widespread in Egypt and present in the New World during ancient times.

Inflammation has been associated with cancer as well. But for some reason, researchers have found very few signs of cancer in ancient mummies. Writing in 2010 in Nature Reviews Cancer, two researchers proposed that this dearth of evidence suggests cancer may have been rare before modern times. They weren?t arguing that cancer didn?t exist at all before people started eating Cheetos and smoking Marlboros: One of the authors, retired pathologist and biologist Michael R. Zimmerman of Villanova University near Philadelphia, recently diagnosed a rectal carcinoma in an Egyptian mummy dating to the 3rd or 4th century A.D. But such diagnoses are rare. It could be that until recently people just didn?t live long enough to develop cancer very often. Or, he and A. Rosalie David of the University of Manchester in England suggested, it could be that modern life immerses us in a sea of carcinogens that ancient people never encountered.

Then again, it?s also possible that researchers just haven?t looked hard enough. When scientists from Portugal and Egypt did CT scans on three mummies housed at the National Archaeological Museum in Lisbon, they found bone lesions in and around the pelvis of a man who died 2,250 years ago that indicated prostate cancer. That discovery, described in 2011 in the International Journal of Paleopathology, was only the second oldest diagnosed case of prostate cancer: The oldest was seen in the skeleton of a Scythian king who died 2,700 years ago. Another study found 13 malignant bone tumors among 3,967 buried in Hungary between the 3rd and 16th centuries. That doesn?t sound like many, but similar cancers are no more common today.

Knowing the extent to which modern diseases are products of our environment could offer valuable clues to preventing the biggest killers of our time. But as we search for clues to our own demise in the remains of those who met theirs so many centuries ago, we should also have the wisdom to remember the message that is clearly written on every mummy?s face: Soon enough, all of us will meet their fate.

NYNE NH-5000

NYNE's latest ?iPod speaker dock, the NH-5000 ($229.95 list) offers an interesting combination of a 30-pin docking connector and wireless Bluetooth capability. That means it works with older Apple devices docked, and newer Android or iOS devices over Bluetooth. The NH-5000 sounds pretty good, too, but a number of questionable design decisions, plus some EQ and distortion issues at higher volumes, keep it from being a top choice.

Design, Connectivity, and Remote
The stylish NH-5000 measures 15.7 by 6.6 by 8 inches (HWD) and weighs 6.5 pounds. It looks more expensive than it is, thanks to its piano black gloss finish, black metal grille, and nicely curved enclosure.?The 30-pin docking connector sits on a hard plastic external protrusion. The NH-5000 is large enough that an iPad docked on it actually looks good, and a small rubberized bumper in the middle of the speaker grille is strong enough to keep everything secure. Plus, the dock connector rotates forward and back on a hinge, so you can pull a device off of the NH-5000 without accidentally snapping off the connector.

Unfortunately, the dock itself doesn't retract. A retractable dock, or at least one that's mostly hidden from view like the one found in the Editors' Choice Bowers & Wilkins Z2, would have made more sense here, given the NH-5000's wireless capabilities. That said, the side of the protruding dock features a 3.5mm auxiliary input, so at least you don't have to reach around the back of the unit to plug in a different kind of MP3 player or cell phone than the dock supports.

The top edge of the NH-5000 features a touch-sensitive control panel with capacitive controls, so you don't feel them when you press down. They include a Power button, a Source select button, and a finicky Volume trackpad that lets you swipe right or left to change volume. I could never get this to work reliably; sometimes it seemed to miss my finger swipes. In a recessed area toward the bottom of the back panel, there's a redundant Power switch, an AC adapter input, a full set of component video outputs, and stereo audio RCA inputs. The video outputs are a nice addition; assuming your HDTV has component video in, you can output any video stored on your iPod, iPad, or iPhone to a large screen while audio plays through the NH-5000.

Pairing via Bluetooth is as simple as can be: Press the Bluetooth button on the remote, and it lights up a flashing Bluetooth icon on the NH-5000's touch-sensitive panel. Search for devices using your device, choose the NYNE NH-5000 when it appears, enter in '0000' for the PIN, and it connects almost instantly.?Power the NH-5000 on, and you'll see a blue LED light up in the bottom right corner of the speaker grille. On top, small white LEDs light up for the selected source and the current volume setting, which increase in number as you turn up the volume. The blue LED also flickers red whenever you press buttons on the remote control, which indicates that it's receiving input.

The included remote control is a thin black slab with a variety of bubbled membrane keys for controlling the NH-5000, including Source, Volume, Track Skip, Play/Pause, Power, Mute, and four EQ modes. The remote doesn't offer playlist control, which is unfortunate. Also in the package: An AC adapter, 3.5mm stereo auxiliary cable, component video out cable, user manual, and Quick Start guide.

Performance and Conclusions
The internal stereo amplifier outputs 25 watts per channel, and features digital signal processing to sculpt the sound. This is a vented enclosure; two bass ports on the back panel, above the extra inputs and outputs, fire backward to increase overall bass response.

About those EQ settings: You get a choice of Movie, Pop, Classic, and Rock settings, with absolutely no explanation in the manual whatsoever, and no indication which one is the default, or most natural-sounding mode. I found the Rock setting to be the most audibly pleasing, and the closest to the way most small speaker docks without configurable EQ are tuned: with a nice bump in the bass response, and a little extra treble emphasis.?Classic seems to be the one that's closest to flat, with less of a smiley EQ curve than the others (which would exaggerate bass and treble response), but it's too harsh for most music thanks to its overly prominent midrange. Pop mode sounds dreadful; it's all upper-midrange boost, which is too harsh even for casual listening. Movie mode boosts low-end extension for bombastic sound effects, and there's a 10kHz treble boost that helps bring out crisp dialog but also sounds unnatural with music.

I tested the NH-5000 with an original Apple iPad docked, and with an iPhone 5 connected via Bluetooth. Flunk's electronic trip-hop track, "Indian Rope Trick," sounded smooth and full, with a nice upper-bass kick drum and a well-rounded sine-wave bass. Rage Against the Machine's "Killing in the Name" sounded powerful and energetic, if a bit strident, and some of the detail I usually hear in the bass guitar's harmonics was MIA; the NH-5000's drivers just aren't that revealing.

Using our standard bass test track, The Knife's "Silent Shout," it was pretty easy to get the NH-5000 to distort. Not so much in Classic mode, but with any of the others, the sound completely fell apart in the low-end as I turned the volume up, even at levels I'd consider reasonable in a small room. This isn't a speaker dock for parties.

In a decidedly crowded field, the NYNE NH-5000 sounds about the way it should for a $230 dock, and its Bluetooth wireless mode adds value, but there are plenty of superior choices.?The Editors' Choice Bowers & Wilkins Z2 speaker dock offers beautifully transparent sound in a slightly smaller enclosure, and also features Apple's new Lightning Connector and AirPlay compatibility, although it costs considerably more and lacks Bluetooth support. The Bose SoundLink Bluetooth Mobile Speaker II, our Editors' Choice for wireless Bluetooth speakers, sounds a bit more neutral, is much smaller, and runs for eight hours on a battery charge, but it doesn't offer the sheer bass oomph of the NH-5000 at lower volumes, and doesn't charge iOS devices either. The Beats by Dr. Dre Beatbox Portable delivers bombastic bass output, offers similar 30-pin docking and Bluetooth wireless capability, and also runs on D-cell batteries, but we weren't thrilled with its audible background hiss, and it's larger and heavier than the NH-5000 as well.

Microsoft working on redesigns for Xbox, Yammer, Skype and Bing

Considering Microsoft's efforts to rebrand, redesign and rebuild its Windows platform, it's no surprise to hear the company is tweaking the visual aesthetics of its other brands, too. Speaking at Design Day 2013, Wolff Olins creative director Todd Simmons and Windows Phone design studio manager Albert Shum talked about the challenges of rebranding a company like Microsoft. "We're still trying to figure out how to put a consumer face on this brand, as an ecosystem," Simmons said, explaining how the team wanted to get away from the idea of Microsoft being a top-down, monolithic entity. The discussion touched on the creation of the Windows 8 logo, but also shed light on efforts to revamp other Microsoft brands. "Other brands are coming along too," Simmons explained, teasing the audience with a pair of sketches. "Bing, Skype, Yammer, Xbox -- everything is under development." As Bangladeshi rescue workers continue to pull survivors and bodies from the ruins of a Dhaka, Bangladesh factory where some 300 were killed in a building collapse Wednesday, thousands of protesters took to the streets across the city to express their outrage at?negligence that has racked the world's second-largest garment-exporting country for years.

Blocking traffic and vandalizing garment factories that stayed open during today?s official day of mourning, protestors smashed cars and clashed violently with police, demanding accountability for what The New York Times is calling ?one of the worst manufacturing disasters in history.?

Among those at the receiving end of the rage are not only unscrupulous local factory owners and lax regulators, but also the Western corporations whose demands for cheaply-made garments have fueled the precarious working conditions in Bangladesh?s 5,000 clothing factories.

Plucked from the rubble of the eight-story factory were labels from several Western brands, including some sold in major chains such as Wal-Mart, JC Penney, and Spanish retailer El Corte Ingles, who immediately began to issue a flurry of sympathetic press releases. British retailer Primark said it was ?shocked and deeply saddened by this appalling incident? and the Canadian retailer Loblaw said it was ?extremely saddened? by the tragedy, the Times reports.

None, however, went so far as to implicate themselves in the disaster.

?These companies have come up with some very effective approaches to distance themselves from responsibility in tragedies like this,? says Heather White, founder of Verite, an independent auditing group.?Indeed, she says, Western companies often bring their garments from factory to store through a tangled and globally sprawled cluster of middlemen ? subcontractors, auditors, consultants ? who not only drive down their prices but also help ensure that responsibility for corporate stumbles are spread thinly.

That leaves many Western consumers, even the most conscientious, flummoxed by how to react to tragedies like the factory collapse, Ms. White says. Short of switching to niche-marketed fair trade brands?think American Apparel or TOMS Shoes ? there?s ?no real way for your average consumer to use their buying power to mobilize around these issues,? she says.

But it wasn?t always that way.

In the late 1990s, a widespread campaign against labor conditions in Nike factories helped shame the company into adopting a code of conduct in its factories for the first time. Responding to massive protests, sit-ins, and hunger strikes, a large number of universities forced the suppliers of their branded athletic apparel to institute labor code reforms in return for their business.

?It was amazing to see how people bought in [to the campaign],? remembers Kirsten Moller, organizing director for the human rights group Global Exchange, which helped lead the Nike campaign. ?They really had no idea what was happening, no idea under what conditions these products they loved were being made.?

So what changed?

As the issue slid from the front page, "people got tired of protesting,? Ms. Moller says.

Many of the activists from the 1990s ? immortalized by their chaotic protests at the 1999 summit of the World Trade Organization ? moved on to new causes, White says, with many becoming deeply involved in anti-war efforts in the early 2000s.?

Most films are experiences to be ignored or at best forgotten. "Blancanieves" is a little classic to be treasured.

It is a full-bodied silent film of the sort that might have been made by the greatest directors of the 1920s, if such details as the kinky sadomasochism of this film's evil stepmother could have been slipped past the censors.

Blancanieves, which won 10 Goyas (Spain's equivalent of the Oscars) and was a smash hit in its native Spain, has traces of a kinky undertone and an uncommon willingness to embrace the darkness inherent in this fairy tale.

As if bewitched, the legend of Snow White is transferred to Seville in the early twentieth century and transformed into high melodrama.

Sensuous, mischievous, hotblooded retelling of the old Teutonic fairy tale.

This gorgeous silent film is an unexpected gift from the gods of pure cinema.

The fun in the Spanish "Blancanieves" is the way it plays with our expectations.

May not have much depth to its characters or particular surprise, but its lovely depiction of family's ability to harm and mend has the flair of flamenco and the sorrow of opera.

No, "Blancanieves" isn't subtle, but it's an unforgettable time at the movies.

Inspired filmmaking steeped in the imagery of silent film history, a dark Iberian strain of Roman Catholicism and the magic of fairy tales.

... lusty and heartfelt, fiery flamenco and spirited country jig. Don't go expecting a Disney-fied fable. Berger seasons with S&M and the kind of macabre touches you'd expect in vintage Browning or Bunuel.

If not for some faintly disturbing imagery and a pleasingly feminist heroine, you could mistake this for a movie actually made in the 1920s (and even those two factors weren't utterly unknown then).

A loving tribute to European silent films of the 1920s; a reminder that cinema need not be constrained by words.

By the time the film arrives at its grand theatrical finale, you're almost prepared for Berger's last great twist. Almost.

this beautifully shot and imaginatively told fairy tale should be seen my many, but only a few will likely get to enjoy it. This is a shame for the audience it is intended for.

This film is simply gorgeous, pure beauty on film, a vision that leaves you breathless and reeling.

Much of the film's emotion is conveyed by Alfonso de Vilallonga's music, which celebrates Spain with uptempo guitar and flamenco when it isn't tipping its hat to Bernard Herrmann during a scene inspired by Hitchcock.

A visual feast, a musical masterpiece and a heartbreaking romance.

The actors are well-chosen and make you forget the lack of dialogue, especially with the artful support of Alfonso de Vilallonga's music.

The silent trappings seem like a gimmick when employed in 2013, but the story's impact is never dulled.

Pinterest revives classic features, revamps notifications and search

When Pinterest unveiled its big redesign last month, it took the sort of gamble on feature trade-offs that we've seen before: some big leaps forward at the expense of a few leaps back. Much to the relief of many, the company is already doing what it can to restore what was lost while still forging ahead. Veteran users can once again see pins they've just posted, mention friends and find would-be contacts on Facebook on Twitter. As for the less nostalgic among us? The progress isn't as dramatic, but it's there: Pinterest has reworked notifications to show their history, and searches now include as-you-type keyword suggestions. More updates are on the way, including notifications for new pins, so we wouldn't worry that Pinterest is spending most of its time mending broken fences.

The Chemical Option: Why Obama Won't Go to War in Syria

Now that Bashar al-Assad has (probably)?crossed the Obama administration's "red line," U.S. officials say "all options are on the table." But you can be pretty sure that a direct attack on Syria isn't one of them. Despite the international?condemnation?that's already coming Assad's way, it's a near?certainty?that the United States will not commit to sending troops into Syria. So what can America do punish the regime?

Well, the first the thing the White House wants to do is conclusively?establish that Assad is the one responsible. The only hard evidence that sarin nerve gas has been used on the Syrian people comes in the form of?blood samples from the victims that tested positive?for the deadly poison after the main attack in question, last month in Aleppo. Beyond that, American officials and their allies could likely never prove beyond reasonable doubt how the gas got there, when it happened, or who was responsible. There's no reason to doubt the blood samples are authentic, but it's been extremely difficult, for the two years and counting of this bloody conflict, for Western agents to gather intelligence from inside Syria. And what little evidence they do have, well, that would hardly hold up in court.

It might hold up in the court of public?opinion, but the U.S. can only play the prosecutor?not the judge or jury. The next step is likely to take evidence to the United Nations, where?Russia (and China) have blocked every effort to pass meaningful resolution against Assad. But?chemical?weapons might be the tipping point that forces Vladimir Putin to abandon his old ally, or at least look the other way. (Especially after his tough talk about terrorism today.)?When talking about "red lines," the U.S. isn't talking about what they find acceptable. It's about what the rest of the world simply can't ignore.

If Russia and China can be convinced that Syria has finally gone too far, there could be a Security Council resolution. If that happens, the U.S. will probably look to follow the same model it used in Libya in 2011. The best case scenario is the declaration of a no-fly zone, to eventually be enforced by NATO. It's the classic "leading from behind" scenario where the U.S. mobilizes its allies, then let's them do the work.?Britain?and France have already talked about arming the rebels, but they probably won't do so without the force of the United States to?legitimize?their move. With American backing and Russia acceptance (if not support) those other efforts can go forward as well.

It's true the Syrian army and air forces are much more formidable than Mummar Qaddafi's military ever was, but there are other circumstances in the mix?namely:Israel, Lebanon, and Iraq. The use of?chemical?weapons is also a circumstance that didn't exist last time the Obama doctrine really went into effect, and it's one that might make it easier for both the world community and the American public to go along.?It's worth noting that while Republican Congressmen are calling for leadership, they aren't calling for American troops to rush into Damascus. But they are onborad with idea of doing something.

No matter what happens, it isn't happening in the?immediate?future. The very phrase "red line" is carefully vague, and no one?including President Obama himself?has ever said what the specific?consequences?of crossing that red line would be. Today's letter?from the White House?makes it plain that the U.S. is leery?about making the wrong call, and that the administration?can't go to the U.N. with less than a bulletproof case, no matter what Chuck Hagel and John Kerry say. They don't have a bulletproof case, and maybe not even a shell casing. Even if the U.S. gets everything it can on what appears to be Assad's deadly gas, everything won't be enough for the White House to believe it and go to war. The whole world has to buy this one.

Boston suspects had "spontaneous" bomb plan for New York

NEW YORK/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The two brothers suspected of carrying out last week's deadly Boston Marathon bombing decided, after the FBI released photos of them, to drive to Manhattan and detonate more explosives in Times Square, New York City officials said on Thursday.

Their plan unraveled when they realized a Mercedes sport utility vehicle they had hijacked on April 18, three days after the Boston bombing, did not have enough gasoline for the journey, said New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.

New York has been on heightened alert since the September 11, plane hijackings in 2001 destroyed the World Trade Center and officials said the plan by the Boston bombing suspects, ethnic Chechens Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, showed America's most populous city remained a magnet for attackers.

Manhattan's Times Square was the target of an attempted car bombing by a Pakistan-born U.S. citizen in May 2010.

In the sharpest criticism of President Barack Obama's security policies since the blasts, a Republican senator said the Boston bombing, which killed three people and wounded 264, illustrated a "broken" national security system.

This week, lawmakers demanded answers about what the U.S. government knew about the suspects before the bombing, especially Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, who Russia had asked the FBI to question in 2011 over concerns he may have been a radical Islamist. He died on Friday in a shootout with police.

The surviving brother, 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, is recovering from wounds in a Boston hospital since he was captured on Friday night and told investigators of the alleged Times Square plan.

"Questioning of Dzhokhar revealed that he and his brother decided spontaneously on Times Square as a target," Kelly told a news conference with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. "They would drive to Times Square that same night.

"That plan, however, fell apart when they realized that the vehicle that they hijacked was low on gas and ordered the driver to stop at a nearby gas station," Kelly said.

At the time, the men still had six explosive devices, including a pressure-cooker bomb of the type used at the marathon and six pipe bombs, he said.

When they stopped to refuel, the driver of the vehicle escaped, Kelly said. The driver alerted authorities and set off a late-night chase and shootout in suburban Watertown, where police say the suspects threw improvised explosives at officers. Hours earlier, the brothers had shot and killed a Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus police officer in Cambridge, authorities said.

Earlier on April 18, the FBI released photos and video of the at the scene of the Boston bombing.

One Republican congressman said investigators have identified "persons of interest" in the United States to whom they would like to speak, some of them because of calls made from Tamerlan Tsarnaev's cell phone.

"There are also persons of interest here that we would like to more fully understand," said Mike Rogers, the chairman of the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee. "Their relationship and what role, if any, they may have played in that whole radicalization process. They are just still persons of interest, so they are not named."

Rogers also said investigators want to learn more about Tamerlan Tsarnaev's 2012 visit to Russia.

PARENTS SAY SONS INNOCENT

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was formally charged on Monday in the hospital with crimes that could carry the death penalty.

His lawyer, Miriam Conrad, declined to comment on whether her client was still talking with investigators.

The U.S. Marshals Service, which is responsible for holding and transporting suspects outside of prison, declined to comment on whether or when Tsarnaev might be moved from the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

The brothers' father said he planned to travel to the United States from Russia to bury his older son, Tamerlan Tsarnaev.

"I am going to the United States. I want to say that I am going there to see my son, to bury the older one. I don't have any bad intentions. I don't plan to blow up anything," Anzor Tsarnaev told reporters in Makhachkala, the capital of Russia's Dagestan region.

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick said investigators might be interested in speaking to the parents.

"There are a lot of questions unanswered about the whys and the hows, and anybody who may be able to shed some light on that is of interest to law enforcement," Patrick said.

Anzor Tsarnaev's former wife, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva, angrily denied that her son had any role in the attack and criticized police for shooting him while apprehending him.

Tsarnaeva does not plan to accompany her former husband on his trip. One factor that may have influenced her decision is an outstanding arrest warrant for her in Massachusetts.

A warrant for Zubeidat Tsarnaeva's arrest was issued on October 25 after she failed to make a court appearance on shoplifting-related charges, according to Natick District Court Clerk Brian Kearney.

'WITCH HUNT'

In Washington, the focus remained on intelligence leading up to the Boston Marathon bombing. Tamerlan Tsarnaev had been on a federal database of potential terrorism suspects and the United States had twice been warned about him by Russian authorities. Congressional testimony this week focused on whether the FBI made mistakes in tracking him.

"We're in the post-event witch-hunt phase, which is predictable," said James Clapper, director of national intelligence, at a conference in Crystal City, Virginia. "I think it would be a real good idea to not hyperventilate for a while now until we actually get all the facts."

Nonetheless, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham blamed the administration for failing to stop the attack.

"I just know the system is broken. The ultimate blame I think is with the administration," the South Carolina senator told reporters, linking the bombings with last year's killing of a U.S. diplomat during an attack on a diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya.

"Between Benghazi and Boston, to me we're going backwards, not forward, in terms of national security," Graham said.

Although the Toshiba Satellite U845t-S4165 ($749.99 list) appears to be the latest entrant in an increasingly crowded field?Windows 8-equipped ultrabooks with touch screens, that is?its agile new Intel Core i5-3337U processor sets it apart from most of its competitors. Zippy processing power, along with a slender chassis and solid all-around performance, converge into a final product that's worthy of serious consideration, though its limited storage capacity and so-so keyboard dampen its overall appeal.

Design and Features
The Satellite U845t-S4165's chassis measures 0.8 by 13.5 by 9.1 inches (HWD). Its silver brushed aluminum finish and slender build make for a handsome system. At a mere 3.6 pounds, it's markedly lighter than many of its competitors, including the Asus VivoBook S500CA-DS51t (4.73 pounds), so carrying it around never feels burdensome.

With its vibrant color reproduction and crisp text, the Satellite U845t-S4165's 14-inch display is easy on the eyes. While it falls short of the full HD resolution offered by the Sony VAIO T15 Touch (SVT15112CXS), its 1,366 by 768 resolution does a fine job of playing content in 720p while, more importantly, keeping the price down. Despite its slightly wobbly hinges, the display's fluidly responsive touch functionality makes navigating through Windows 8 a user-friendly experience. The built-in speakers below the display belt out clean, crisp sounds, though don't expect its maximum volume level to fill anything beyond a dorm room.

Like many of its peers, the Satellite U845t-S4165's chiclet-style keyboard's keys display short keystrokes and a noticeable amount of flexing. Although the keyboard deserves props for being backlit, that doesn't change the fact that typing on the Satellite U845t-S4165 for an extended period of time creates unnecessary and easily avoidable feelings of frustration. Thankfully, the Satellite U845t-S4165's ergonomic miscalculations don't extend to its touchpad, which complements the system's touch display thanks to its full support of Windows 8-specific gestures. It was also smooth to use.

Ultrabooks aren't very generous when it comes to port offerings, and the Satellite U845t-S4165 is no exception. The left side of its chassis houses a pair of USB 2.0 ports, an SD card reader, and an Ethernet port while the right side features the system's only USB 3.0 port, headphone and microphone jacks, and a full-sized HDMI port. While the latter makes connecting the Satellite U845t-S4165 to an HDTV a dongle-free endeavor, you also have the option of ditching cables altogether and use Intel's Wireless Display (WiDi) technology, which wirelessly beams data to any HDTV outfitted with an aftermarket adapter like the Netgear Push2TV.

Although it's a zippy performer, the Satellite U845t-S4165's 128GB solid-state drive (SSD) is far from capacious. Moreover, it's loaded with a sizeable amount of preloaded software. Devotees won't be surprised to hear that these programs include pure bloatware (links to Netflix and eBay, WildTangent Games, Windows Essentials), an avalanche of proprietary software (Toshiba BookPlace, App Place, Media Controller, and many, many more) and trial versions (30-day trials of Microsoft Office 365, Norton Internet Security, Norton Anti-Theft). Toshiba covers the Satellite U845t-S4165 with a one-year warranty.

Performance
The Satellite U845t-S4165's dual-core 1.8GHz Intel Core i5-3337U processor is a step up from the Intel Core i5-3317U CPU that appeared in many of the preceding Fall and Winter's ultrabook offerings. As it were, the rest of its class sports the latter processor, with the sole exception being the VAIO T15 Touch. Consequently, in most of our tests the Satellite U845t-S4165 sailed past the competition. Its class-leading PCMark7 score of 4,834 points edged past the Sony T15 Touch (4,112 points) and Toshiba Satellite U945-S4390 (4,025 points) while handily trouncing the Asus VivoBook S400CA-UH51 (3,013 points). Similarly, its Cinebench R11.5 score of 2.48 points was on equal footing with our current Editors' Choice for entry-level touch-screen ultrabooks, the Acer Aspire M5-481PT-6644 (2.48 points), and landed within striking distance of the class-leading Acer Aspire M5-581T-6405 (2.51 points).

The U845t-S4165 fared nearly as well in our multimedia benchmark tests, proving itself capable of satisfying users interested in dabbling with moderate levels of photo and video editing. It wrapped up our Handbrake video-encoding test in the same amount of time as both the Sony T15 Touch and Acer Aspire M5-581T-6405 (1:25 each) while edging past the Toshiba U945-S4390 (1:28). The Satellite U845t-S4165 also led the pack in running through a dozen or so filters in Photoshop CS6 (5:20), besting the Sony T15 Touch (5:21) and Asus S500CA-DS51t (5:30) by narrow margins.

The Satellite U845t-S4165's integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 GPU simply isn't cut out for high-end gaming. It therefore unsurprisingly failed to crack the 30 frames per second (fps) playability threshold in either Aliens vs. Predator or Heaven. Outside of gaming, however, its finesse for rendering 3D graphics was apparent in its class-leading performance in 3DMark11 (1,231 points in Entry-level settings, 226 in Extreme mode).

The Satellite U845t-S4165's 54Wh lasted 6 hours 17 minutes in our battery rundown test, placing it on the same space as the top-performing Acer M5-581T-6405 (6:17) and significantly ahead of the competition, including the Sony T15 Touch (4:18). If you're on the market for an ultrabook that can get you through most of the day without being tethered to a power outlet, the Satellite U845t-S4165 is the way to go.

The Toshiba Satellite U845t-S4165 is a solid all-around ultrabook that boasts a zippy processor, solid battery life, and an eye-catching slender chassis. Were it not for its limited storage capacity and so-so keyboard, it would have offered stiff competition to the Acer Aspire M5-481PT-6144, our Editors' Choice for entry-level touch-screen ultrabooks. Still, it remains worthy of serious consideration.

Republican split on immigration blunts party rebranding

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - When a bipartisan group of senators began writing legislation to overhaul the nation's immigration laws in January, many Republican leaders embraced the effort as a savvy strategy for fixing the party's tattered image with Hispanic voters.

But since the bill was rolled out last week, a rift has emerged among conservatives that has played out in Senate hearings on Capitol Hill, on conservative talk shows and in social media such as Twitter and blogs.

The immigration effort has brought together an unusual coalition of Republicans, led by Florida Senator Marco Rubio, a potential 2016 presidential prospect, Arizona Senator John McCain, a former presidential candidate who has broken ranks with his party on some issues, and conservative anti-tax activist Grover Norquist.

But it has also put a spotlight on longstanding opposition to immigration reform within the party, potentially blunting the message party leaders had hoped to send in their efforts to remake the party's image, begun in earnest by the Republican National Committee after President Barack Obama swept to victory with 71 percent of the Hispanic vote in 2012.

Opponents of immigration reform include some traditional conservatives such as Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama as well as some relative newcomers, including Texas Senator Ted Cruz, a Tea Party favorite. Another opponent of the immigration reform bill is Jim DeMint, a former South Carolina senator who is now president of the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank.

Luke Frans, executive director of Resurgent Republic, an organization that conducts polling and research for Republicans, said his group has met with Capitol Hill Republicans on the subject, advising them to avoid allowing the debate over immigration to become a "circular firing squad" in which Republicans are attacking their own.

"Conservatives have certainly seen in past debates where it's veered off the policy and become more of a personal tone. That's what we're really trying to avoid this time around," he said.

Critics of the legislation have labeled as "amnesty" a provision at the heart of the bill that would grant legal status to millions of undocumented immigrants. They also warn that the legislation would drive up the federal debt as immigrants eventually become eligible for federal benefits such as Social Security.

Supporters say providing legal status for the undocumented would bring people out of the shadows and ensure that they are working and paying taxes. Advocates also say the bill, which would establish new guest worker programs for both highly skilled and low-skilled workers, would boost the economy by making the labor market more flexible.

The debate is still in its early stages and many Republicans say the rancor is still far from the level that it reached in past immigration debates, such as one in 2006 and 2007 when criticism of comprehensive immigration reform on talk radio jammed phone lines at the Capitol.

But it may not be far beneath the surface either, to judge from some of the exchanges in the past week.

In a posting that highlighted the divisions among conservatives, Erick Erickson of the influential RedState political blog accused Rubio staffers and other supporters of the immigration bill of trying to paint critics as bigoted and racist.

Elsewhere, especially on Twitter, some conservative opponents of the immigration bill accused Rubio - falsely - of supporting the distribution of free phones to illegal immigrants.

Rubio has spent much of the last week appearing on conservative radio and TV stations to defend the legislation.

"We always realized that this was a complicated issue and that we were going to have to spend a lot of time explaining it," Rubio spokesman Alex Conant said. Conant described the response so far in conservative media as "mixed."

The bomb attack at the Boston Marathon last week that was allegedly carried out by two immigrant brothers of Chechnyan descent intensified the debate among Republicans over the immigration bill.

Some Republicans, including Senator Charles Grassley of Iowa and Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, said the Boston attack, which killed three people and injured more than 250, were a reason to be cautious on immigration reform.

But other Republicans, including House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner and House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, argued that the Boston bombing showed the need to fix and modernize the immigration system.

While DeMint of the Heritage Foundation has been a vocal skeptic of the immigration reform bill, many of the scholars at two other influential conservative research organizations, the Cato Institute and the American Enterprise Institute, have been supportive of broad reform.

Charlie Black, a longtime adviser to Republican candidates who is now chairman of Prime Policy Group, a public affairs consulting firm, said the divisions among Republicans do not break down "along traditional lines" of conservative and moderate.

Whit Ayres, a Republican strategist who backs immigration reform, said Republican voters who may be skeptical of the effort are persuadable if proponents use the right message on immigration reform.

He said the strongest argument is that the current immigration system amounts to a "de facto amnesty" and that reforming the system is "better than anything (Democratic President) Barack Obama, left to his own devices, is likely to come up with."

Some conservative activists may be easier to persuade than others on immigration reform.

Chris Littleton of the Tea Party group Ohio Rising, said he did not understand what was behind all of the criticism of immigration reform.

"There are clearly employers who need low-cost labor and immigrants who want jobs, so there is clearly a functioning market here. Everybody's benefiting from the situation so I don't know why we need this debate," he said.

But David Crow of the Arkansas Conservative Caucus, another Tea Party group, said the proposed immigration bill would "simply create a magnet for more and more people to come across the border."

"In my opinion it is a huge mistake to go down this path when it's evident it will attract more and more illegal aliens," Crow added

Plenty to prove still

Justin Upton smashed his major league-high 10th homer Tuesday in the Braves? 4-3 win over the Rockies. He?s hit three more homers than anyone else in the majors, and in just 19 games, he?s already more than halfway to surpassing his total of 17 from 150 games last year.

On the other hand, Justin Upton has driven in a total of 14 runs this year. That?s exactly as many as Daniel Nava has amassed. It?s the same total compiled by .191-hitting Anthony Rizzo. It?s also a match for Allen Craig, who is hitting .250 with no homers.

A lot of it is the Braves, no doubt. Andrelton Simmons, Jason Heyward and B.J. Upton have all struggled ahead of Justin in the third spot in the order. But a lot if it is Justin, too. He?s hitting .386 in 44 at-bats with the bases empty and .148 in 27 at-bats with runners on. Nine of his 10 homers have been solo shots.

Whether it totally fits into the ?grit? narrative, Upton?s run production was part of the knock on him when the Diamondbacks decided to move him. Not only has he never topped 100 RBI, but he?s never even reached 90.

That?s not to say it?s ever been quite like this before. Last year, Upton?s average went down slightly with men on and RISP, but his slugging percentage went up. In 2010, he hit 50 points better with RISP than with the bases empty. Overall, though, his career line looks like this:

Bases empty: .286/.355/.509, 75 HR in 1,554 AB
Runners on: .267/.361/.449, 43 HR in 1,180 AB
RISP: .255/.363/.429, 23 HR in 645 AB

Upton averages a homer every 20.7 AB with the bases empty, every 27.4 AB with runners on and every 28.0 AB with RISP.

I don?t think any of that suggests Upton is poor in the clutch. Interestingly, he actually has better numbers in high leverage situations than medium or low leverage situations, as Baseball-Reference defines them. But up to this point in his career, there?s no denying that Upton hasn?t been all that productive in RBI situations. When he?s hitting solo homers every other game, that?s not a problem. Once he slows, the debate could rage again.
