It took Ford the whole 12 months of last fiscal to rack up sales of 75771 vehicles.
It?s EcoSport got a third of that in just 17 days, arguably the best launch in Indian Motown?s history, and perhaps among the best in the haloed history of the American carmaker.
The compact sports utility vehicle (SUV) may end up with more than half of fiscal 2013?s number in July, some say.
The company however refused to officially confirm the number but said the EcoSport has received a ?tremendous response? so far.
?We will soon share the official number of exact bookings of the vehicle,? said a company spokesperson.
The compact SUV was launched on June 26 at an aggressive starting price of Rs 5.59 lakh (ex showroom Delhi).
?We continue to get healthy booking numbers on a daily basis. We have not stopped taking any further orders despite a huge response,? said a Mumbai-based dealer.
According to experts, competitive pricing and positioning of the product has boosted the overall demand for EcoSport.
?People who were looking to buy vehicles like the Swift, DZire and even Amaze, are going for EcoSport because of its competitive pricing and also it covers wide range of price segments including small cars, sedans and even SUVs,? said another dealer.
Sales of Ford?s Indian operations have remained under pressure in the past, despite the initial success of its small car Figo.
Sales declined 16.2% in the last fiscal from 90,423 units in fiscal 2012. While the sales of Figo witnessed a decline of 13% last fiscal.
?The Indian customers, particularly in the small car or a mid-size segment are very price conscious. The chances of a product becoming successful are very high when it gives much more value proposition other than the looks and pricing,? said Abdul Majeed, leader of the automotive practice at PricewaterhouseCoopers.
Honda?s compact sedan Amaze ? the Japanese carmaker?s first diesel offering in India ? also managed to garner over 22,000 bookings within 3 weeks of launch.
Ford recently recalled the diesel variant of EcoSport owing to a problem related to Glow Plug Module.
