ARDSLEY-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. -- St. Peter's made some improvement since the last time it faced Fordham Prep, but it wasn't enough.
In a rematch of last year's CHSAA championship, the Eagles dropped a 4-1 decision Tuesday to the two-time defending league champion Rams at Ardsley Country Club.
"It was absolutely pouring, but the course held up unbelievably," said SP coach Mike Sanborn, whose club lost 5-0 in last year's 18-hole final at Marine Park. "Still, it's a tough course. A lot of up and down, up and down."
Nationally ranked first-flighter Cameron Young led the second-seeded Rams with a pair of birdies over the first five hole en route to a 5-and-4 win over Nick Diamnatis. But the Eagles' Chris Coughlin posted an impressive 2-and-1 victory over a tough Jackson Zepf to get No. 3 St. Peter's on the board.
"We had a tough time today," Sanborn said. "They have a couple of big kids who were hitting 260-270 (yards) off the tee. And with the weather we had, that made it so much longer compared to our two freshmen (Chris Gallo and Brent Fredericksen).
"There were two blind spots on the first hole and a couple of blind tee shots that hurt us. And two of their kids belong to the country club. It was like spotting them a hole or two," said Sanborn, who exits the season with high hopes for 2014.
"We have a bright future," said the coach, whose squad has won the Island division the past two years. "We don't lose anyone. Coughlin and Diamantis return as seniors, (Mike) Lieberman will be a junior, and Gallo and Fredericksen will be sophomores."
The Rams will look to capture their fifth league title in six seasons on a championship date to be decided. Their opponent will be the winner of Wednesday's semifinal between No. 8 St. Joseph by-the-Sea and fourth-seeded Iona Prep.
