William Herschel Telescope and the largest of the 18 century

William Herschel was perhaps the greatest astronomer of the 18th Century. He made many discoveries, including the discovery of Uranus. But his biggest claim to fame was his ability to build telescopes. During his lifetime he hand-built over 400 telescopes with giant, over 40 meters in length with a mirror that is nearly 50 feet wide. It opens the way for many astronomers and telescope makers for centuries to come.

He for the first time the pursuit of astronomy asHobbies. It is very likely remained just a hobby, but one night in 1781 discovered the planet Uranus, and brought him fame and fortune enough to his regular work as a musician. He went on to astronomy and telescopes to a full-time study. He was so impressed by him and by the art of telescope, made that he got the position of the king during his lifetime and astronomer telescopes and discoveries of celestial objects, which form much of modern scienceand research in astronomy.

It was born in 1738 and lived to 1822. During this time he and his sister Caroline spent many hours and many nights to observe celestial objects and making ever larger telescopes. His largest telescope was bigger than a house, and while it was an extraordinary instrument, it was complicated to use, so it is a smaller telescope, which was only twenty meters long for most of his great discoveries and observations.

Some of HerschelDiscoveries and achievements

He discovered a new planet (Uranus) in 1781
He discovered two moons of Uranus
He discovered two moons of Saturn (Mimas and Enceladus)
He discovered two new moons of Jupiter (Titania and Oberon)
He coined the word asteroid from the Greek
It has an extensive catalog of nebulae called the Herschel Catalog which has created more than 2,500 offers
He discovered that the stars are not optical doubles, but two real double starturned to each other. This was important because it was the first proof that Newton's law of gravitation applies to objects outside our solar system.
By observing the motion of stars has also discovered that our solar system moves through space. He decided in which direction it is moving.

He built most of his telescopes and used them in his house in Bath, England, and to this day has stopped and the house has been converted into a museum that the public can visit. Thecalled Herschel Museum of Astronomy.

His sister Caroline spent many years as an assistant and they would make copious notes while observing through the telescope. Finally he began to make his comments on his own and became quite famous astronomer in her own right. And "on to many discoveries including eight comets and the M 110 galaxy, which is the second companion galaxy, the famous Andromeda Galaxy.

William Herschel lived in a time whenwas not possible to just buy a telescope. He was forced to build his own. For this reason he advanced science and art of astronomical telescope. His largest telescope was the largest in the world for nearly 50 years. To do eventually technology improves and allows other people to even bigger and better telescopes. However, Herschel make a special place in the world of astronomy and telescope, as the producer of the 18 largest telescopeCentury and one of the greatest observers of all time.
